Meet British Star Benedict Cumberbatch His Family Who Opened Their Home to Ukrainian Refugees

Movie star Benedict Cumberbatch and his family made headlines for offering their home in the United Kingdom to people who fled from Ukraine due to the Russian invasion.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” premieres in theaters on May 6, 2022, with Benedict Cumberbatch leading the star-studded cast as Sorcerer Stephen Strange.

Cumberbatch’s importance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is undeniable. Still, he and his family have positively impacted the real world, including opening their home to Ukrainian refugees. Here’s all you need to know about the Cumberbatch family.

WHO IS BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH’S WIFE, SOPHIE HUNTER?

Benedict Cumberbatch might be the most famous member of his family, but his wife Sophie Hunter is a talented and multifaceted artist. She is an actress, singer, theater director, and playwright. 

Hunter debuted as a director in 2007’s “The Terrific Electric” and has directed many more plays. Apart from acting in “Midsomer Murders” and “Henry VIII: Mind of a Tyrant,” Hunter also released an album in French in 2009 and another one in English in 2011.

Before marrying Benedict Cumberbatch, Sophie Hunter was in a long relationship with sculptor Conrad Shawcross. In 2009, when Hunter was single, she worked next to Cumberbatch in “Burlesque Fairytale.” 

The “Sherlock Holmes” star was then dating Olivia Poulet, so nothing romantic happened between them right away. Cumberbatch and Poulet parted ways in 2010, and he and Hunter sparked dating rumors for the first time at the French Open in 2014.

HOW MANY CHILDREN DOES BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH HAVE?

Later that year, the couple announced their engagement through an ad in the births, deaths, and marriages column of The Times. Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter married on Valentine’s Day 2015 on the Isle of Wright, off the coast of Great Britain.

He kept most details under wraps to protect his and the [refugee] family’s privacy.

Cumberbatch and Hunter started having children right away as their eldest, Christopher, was born in June 2015. Hal, the couple’s middle son, joined the family in March 2017. Their third son, Finn, was born in 2019.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH’S LIFE AS A HUSBAND AND DAD

Cumberbatch’s children helped him change his parents’ perception and what they did and went through for him over the years. He said: 

“I can only hope to be half as good [a parent] as they were to me, to my children. I have their example to follow so I’ll be doing something right if I am.”

Sadly, naysayers have targeted Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter’s relationship in the past, claiming that their romance and kids were a PR stunt. 

Cumberbatch said it was probably linked to the idea that the “internet’s boyfriend” must not belong to anyone else but the internet. Luckily, their love has persevered.

After receiving a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Cumberbatch praised Hunter for her “searing honesty.” He also thanked her for their three boys, adding that they keep him grounded despite his achievements.

In late April 2022, the “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” star made headlines for welcoming a Ukrainian family of refugees into his UK home after they fled from their home country following Russia’s invasion. 

He kept most details under wraps to protect his and the family’s privacy but confessed he wanted to give them some stability. 

Benedict Cumberbatch confessed the family had already left Ukraine, and he kept monitoring their progress as they made it to his home.

Sophie Hunter’s husband has also worked with the Refugees at Home charity to help UK-based Ukrainians house their extended families. What a big heart he has!
