Seattle sports fans were treated to a touching celebration of WNBA legend Sue Bird on June 11, as the Seattle Storm retired her jersey. Though her retirement from professional basketball may have been bittersweet, Bird was surrounded by love and support from her fiancée, soccer star Megan Rapinoe.

Rapinoe took the opportunity to honor Bird’s legacy as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, possibly even the best in any sport, ever. “I love you so much, congratulations on arguably the best career that anyone has ever had in the history of any sport ever,” Rapinoe said to Bird during the ceremony. The couple, who met in 2016 and got engaged four years later, are known for their mutual admiration and support of each other’s athletic achievements.

Despite her incredible success in basketball, Bird expressed a sense of loss and longing as she retired from her beloved sport. “I didn’t really want to leave the court,” she admitted after her team lost the playoffs in September 2022, echoing similar sentiments at the jersey retirement ceremony. “I think some people try to avoid missing it when they’re in my seat up here, and the reality is I’m always going to miss it.”

Still, Bird’s legacy as a basketball superstar and an inspiration to women in sports is secure, thanks in no small part to the support of her partner, Rapinoe. The two athletes have now embarked on a new venture together, launching their own production company, “A Touch More.” Fans can’t wait to see what the power couple will achieve in this new chapter of their lives.
