Before Meghan walked away, the girl requested a hug, which she obliged. The former actress’s kind gesture soon went viral, and netizens gushed about how thoughtful and kind it was. One user wrote:

Another respondent commented: “She is SO sweet! And we can definitely see that she’s not playing, she takes the lead, she looks straight in the eyes, she asked questions and understood, the name of the girl, it was really sincere❤.”

Other users also found a resemblance between Meghan and her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. According to one of them:

“That’s that Diana spirit that none of the Royal women possess.”

However, though many commended the Duchess of Sussex’s kind gesture, Meghan should have behaved in another way in that situation, according to Royal Protocol. Nevertheless, her actions meant a lot to the girl, who later revealed that she needed Meghan’s hug.

Meghan’s Action Was Against Royal Protocol

It is no news that there are protocols that govern the communication between royal members and ordinary people.

For example, the men are expected to do a neck bow, while the women do a little curtsy. On other occasions, a simple handshake is preferable.

There had been misconceptions that the disease could be transmitted through physical touch, but Diana’s actions proved otherwise.

Although these rules are not strict, it is better to follow traditional practices, which is why experts questioned Meghan’s action toward the girl.

However, even though the Duchess of Sussex did not abide by the Royal Protocol, her kind gesture brought joy to the girl, who needed the hug.

During a chat with CNN’s Scott McLean, the girl explained that she requested a hug because she looked up to Meghan and also felt it was the right thing to do. The young lady further mentioned that she wanted to show the Duchess that:

“she is welcome here.”

While Meghan may have touched fans with her actions, she is not the first royal member to ignore protocol and treat people well with all her heart.

Princess Diana Ignored Royal Rules

Before her death, Princess Diana gained the love of royal fans for many reasons, including her humanitarian acts. She was the first royal who started getting closer to ordinary people.

Diana often proved the importance of treating people well, despite their social status. In 1987, she shook hands with an Aids patient without gloves after opening Britain’s first Aids ward in London.

There had been misconceptions that the disease could be transmitted through physical touch, but Diana’s actions proved otherwise.

According to her brother, she needed to convey a clear message, assuring the public that they could live in a community with people battling the disease and render help.

With time, Diana stopped wearing gloves because she loved shaking people and holding hands. In addition, the late Princess of Wales enjoyed hugging children, including her sons, hence her decision to quit wearing hats.

According to her, it was challenging to cuddle kids in a hat. Many pictures on the internet showed moments when little children were in the late Princess of Wales’ embrace.

In other photos, Diana was either holding or carrying little children. She cared less about royal protocols and more about treating people around with love.

Even though she is no more, Diana is still an example to many. Pictures capturing the moments of her kind gestures will always serve as a reminder of how much of a “people person” she was.

Meghan’s Behavior Towards People Is Like Princess Diana’s

Like the late Princess of Wales, the Duchess of Sussex seemingly prefers to be without gloves and enjoys hugging people. This has caused a lot of reactions and thoughts from experts.

In 2019, Journalist Elizabeth Holmes mentioned that Meghan’s decision to be without gloves symbolizes her desire to connect with the public. According to Holmes:

“I think there’s something about skin-to-skin contact. When you can shake someone’s hand, and you can actually touch them, that’s very intimate, and Meghan is very, very good at connecting with crowds.”

The journalist further explained that intimacy and accessibility were a part of the former actress’s royal brand. In her words:

“In that way, Markle is emulating her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.”

From offering hugs to young children during a tour to Australia and South Africa to hugging celebrities at movie premieres, Meghan has proven that, indeed, physical contact is a part of her royal brand.

According to Body Language Expert Judi James, “a hug is the most intimate and emotional form of greeting ritual.”
