Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega reunited with the Scream cast at MPTF’s 17th Annual Evening Before Gala.
Barrera and Ortega reassembled the “Core 4” that included Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, who have been together since the film franchise’s reboot with 2022’s Scream V and 2023’s Scream VI.
The reunion also included cast members Liana Liberato, Tony Revolori, Jack Quaid and Barrera’s on-screen father and OG Ghostface Skeet Ulrich. See the video below.
Barrera was dropped from Scream VII after the star shared a social media post about the Israel-Hamas conflict. Spyglass Media believed Barrera’s stance on the conflict was antsemetic and said in a statement, “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Days later, Barrera would break her silence on social media to double down on her stance saying she felt that having a platform “allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need.”
“I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom,” Barrera continued. “Silence is not an option for me.”
Ortega, who played Barrera’s sister on-screen, would drop out of the seventh installment of the horror franchise a day later citing scheduling conflicts with her Netflix series Wednesday.
Following the turmoil, Scream 7 director Christopher Landon also announced he was stepping down from his duties.
“I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago,” Landon shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.”
