Snow is set to fall in Yorkshire this weekend, according to a Met Office weather map.

It comes after the forecaster warned ‘disruptive snow’ will hit the UK next week as an arctic airmass rolls towards the UK. Snow is expected in Scotland over the coming days with areas such as Aberdeen expected to see the worst of it.

And it seems Yorkshire will not escape as brief flurries of snow are forecast this weekend.

The Yorkshire coast is the only area expected to see snowfall this weekend before the white stuff arrives in more areas of the county later this month. A Met Office weather map shows that between 1-4mm of snow will come down just south of Whitby at 8.15am on Sunday.

By 8.30am, the snow showers will have moved towards Scarborough. Snow is expected to be replaced by rain as the day progresses.

The same map shows heavier snow flirting with the coastline between Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington at 9am on Monday with the threat of snowfall expected to remain until midday.

A wider weather front will then approach Yorkshire from the west on Wednesday (January 16) with Liverpool, Preston and other parts of Lancashire forecast snow during the early hours.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist David Hayter has said “initial snow risk from Sunday onwards is looking most likely to be coastal areas in the north of the UK.” He continued: “There is an ongoing likelihood of some disruptive snow through the middle to latter part of next week.

“What we’re keeping an eye on for this disruptive snow is where exactly this milder air from the southwest bumps into the cold air that will be in place over the UK.

“It’s where these airmasses meet that there’s a likelihood of some substantial snow for some places.

“At the moment, models are showing us a variety of options for exactly when and how this situation plays out and it’s something we’ll be able to add more details to in the coming days.”

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: “The temperatures we will see leading into the weekend can rapidly have a serious impact on the health of those over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions as it increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections. It is therefore vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours to ensure they are well prepared for the cold weather next week.”
