‘My Mother Didn’t Raise a Hypocrite’: Brendan Fraser Says He Won’t Attend Golden Globes

Brendan Fraser, famous for “The Mummy” trilogy, has been nominated for many roles during his life. However, a recent film has led him to say that if he is nominated once more, he will make different decisions than most actors.

The actor has strong opinions about any awards he might receive for his role in the film “The Whale.” It has a lot to do with the values his mother raised him to have. Fraser has recently spoken out.

Fraser was one of the greatest actors of his time and is no stranger to awards ceremonies. However, after he shied away from Hollywood following negative publicity around his appearance, his opinion of the ceremonies changed.

He is currently in line to win an Oscar for his role in “The Whale,” which might have led to a Golden Globe award. However, when asked whether or not he would attend the ceremonies, he said:

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. No, I will not participate. It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that.”

What History Does Brendan Fraser Have with the Golden Globes?

While many actors find it an honor to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award, Fraser would prefer not to be associated with the ceremony. The reason stems back to a 2003 incident between Fraser and Philip Berk.

Berk is a former president and member of the HFPA. The HFPA is the organization that runs the Golden Globes and votes for the award winners. Fraser alleged that Berk had groped him in the early 2000s at The Beverly Hills Hotel.

Fraser was young at the time and decided not to say anything, but shortly after that, he began to fade from the spotlight. Eventually, he was all but forgotten by Hollywood until he shared his experience four years ago.

When his accusations came out, the HFPA released a statement regarding what Fraser had said about Berk. They said they stood firmly against sexual harassment and would investigate the matter.

The organization also claimed that they had been unaware of Berk’s actions and then said that while they understood it was inappropriate, after talking to Berk, it could be confirmed that the incident was meant to be taken as a joke.

The HFPA wanted Fraser to sign the above statement as a joint statement which they would release to put the matter to bed. However, Fraser refused.

What Relationship Did Fraser Have with His Mom?

Fraser was born to Peter and Carol Fraser, a journalist and a saleswoman who lived in Canada before he was born in Indiana. He had a good relationship with both his parents and was close to his mother, who he said did not raise a hypocrite.

In a 2016 interview, Fraser appeared sad and spoke softly for the duration. The incident ensured that he was turned into a meme. While the meme was circulated worldwide, the reason behind the sadness was awful.

Months after the interview was conducted, fans speculated what could have caused Fraser’s morose episode. Many thought it was due to his 2009 divorce; others believed it was the franchises he had previously starred in being rebooted without him being recast.

Fraser later confirmed that he felt old because of the new ways interviews were conducted. He had not interviewed for many years before that one, but he was also mourning for his mother, whom he mentioned he had buried not long before the interview.
