California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, has declared his opposition to the prospect of blocking children from playing tackle football.

A proposal put forward in the left-wing state would prohibit youth sports organizations from allowing kids under the age of 12 to take part in tackle football.

But while the measure has not even been passed, the Golden State governor already rejected the idea.

“I will not sign legislation that bans youth tackle football. I am deeply concerned about the health and safety of our young athletes, but an outright ban is not the answer,” Newsom said in a statement, according to The Hill. “My administration will work with the Legislature and the bill’s author to strengthen safety in youth football — while ensuring parents have the freedom to decide which sports are most appropriate for their children.”

“As part of that process, we will consult with health and sports medicine experts, coaches, parents, and community members to ensure California maintains the highest standards in the country for youth football safety,” he said in the statement, according to the outlet.

Newsom, who survived a recall in 2021 and won re-election in 2022, faced off in a debate against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last year.

“I do look forward to the Governor’s invitation to work on ways to better protect our youngest athletes and keep them safe from repetitive heads hits which can cause chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE),” California state Assembly member Kevin McCarty (D) said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.
