Melissa “MelRo” Roshan didn’t have a normal childhood like most of her peers. By the time she was 16, she had gotten pregnant and was forced to drop out of school to take care of her son as a single mother.

There was no doubt in Melissa’s mind that her son was her priority, and it remained this way for years. She worked two jobs since giving birth, hoping to provide for him the best way she could.

Melissa’s Challenging Childhood

Melissa grew up in 23 different foster care and group homes, having been abused by family members as a child. Unfortunately, her troubles did not end when she was in the system, and she was subject to the same abuse.

When she got pregnant, she was forced to live in a homeless shelter for teenage parents, where she earned her GED and worked to earn for her and Trey. “It was hard, but we made it work,” Melissa proudly said.

A Different Story from Her Peers

Despite her troubled beginnings, Melissa became a model and foster youth advocate. While Melissa’s former classmates went on to enjoy normal milestones that people their age would experience, like prom, graduation, and going to college, she experienced none of these. However, she never thought much about it – she accepted her reality, saying:

“After surviving a tumultuous childhood and an even harder time while in foster care, I immediately transitioned into being a teen mother. Seeing all my friends around me go to prom … was incredibly difficult. Part of me really wanted to go, but I knew I had a baby that needed me. And that became my reason for finding peace in missing out.”

Although Melissa always dreamt about how her prom night would play out, it never happened. She thought she’d wear a big princess ball gown and have the most popular guy in school take her, with him looking like her celebrity crush, Johnny Depp.

A Chance to Go to Prom

Little did Melissa know, it wasn’t too late for her to go to prom. Her son, Trey Potter, insisted on giving her a special night when he asked her to be his prom date. In fact, he had been waiting for the moment since he was 11 years old.

Growing up, he heard his mom talk about prom several times. It was what made him realize that prom was an important milestone in girls’ lives, and he wanted his mom to have the experience that other girls her age did.

At first, Melissa was hesitant to attend prom with her son because she knew how important it was for a high school student to attend the special night with his friends. “You would do that for me?” she asked Trey when he asked her to be his date.

A Plan Seven Years in the Making

“Absolutely,” Trey responded. “I knew since I was 11, I would bring her as my date.” Trey had nothing but nice words to say about his mom and the experience they shared together. Knowing how much his mom sacrificed to raise him well, he said that taking her to prom was the least he could do.

It was only a week before prom that Melissa realized her son was serious about taking her. Trey was determined to fill the void that had been empty for years.

So, on the day of the prom, Melissa and Trey spent the whole day getting dressed and pampered for their night out. Dressed in Vera Wang, at 36 years old, Melissa walked inside the prom alongside her 18-year-old son. She shared that all eyes were on her and her son during the unforgettable night.

Feeling Like a Star

“I felt like a model and a movie star! I loved my dress, but I loved my date even more. Turns out he was even more handsome than Johnny Depp!” she gushed.

While initially feeling too old to be there, she let herself enjoy and feel like a kid again. However, so that she didn’t hog up too much of her son’s time with his friends, she left after an hour and went to sleep that night with happiness and peace in her heart. “It was one of the greatest moments of my life,” she admitted.

Trey spoke about how beautiful his mom looked, saying she didn’t look 36 at all – to him, she looked 16 again, and was happy to see her so happy. His prom marked the end of his high school journey and also marked a new beginning for him. After graduation, Trey became the first member of Melissa’s family to ever attend college, pursuing a degree in chemical engineering.
