TransPennine Express has been dubbed the most unreliable train operator.

Accident compensation experts at Claims.co.uk have warned passengers to avoid TransPennine Express services this year as data reveals it is the most unreliable train operator. TransPennine Express reportedly had the highest percentage of cancelled trains between 2018 and 2021, and is most likely to have service disruptions, according to passenger rail performance data.

The new research carried out by Claims.co.uk has revealed which train operators have the highest percentage of cancelled or significantly late trains to determine which operator is most likely to experience disruptions throughout 2024. The data investigated passenger rail performance between 2018 and 2022, analysing over 20 train operators and their performance.

The data revealed that TransPennine Express is the operator most likely to experience delays throughout the year. Between 2018 and 2022, 7.95 per cent of all trains experienced cancellations or were significantly delayed. The data also revealed that 57 per cent of all trains were on time, which is 18 per cent below the average percentage of on-time trains across all operators.

TransPennine Express covers routes across North England, including Yorkshire, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Glasgow.

A spokesperson for Claims.co.uk has commented on these findings. They said: “Numerous factors can explain why trains end up delayed or cancelled; these range from infrastructure issues to weather and seasonal issues.

“The data revealed train faults were this operator’s most common cause of delays. Train faults are issues that result in the train being unfit for service; this could range from doors being unable to lock or PA system faults, which prevent instructions from being given out in an emergency. Between 2018 and 2022, TransPennine Express experienced 1,075 train faults.

“It is always best to plan journeys, and if possible, travel slightly earlier as a contingency if trains are delayed or cancelled.”

Chris Jackson, managing director for TransPennine Express, said: “Delivering a stable and reliable service for customers is our number one priority, and we are doing everything we can to make this happen.

“Since TPE’s transfer to DOHL ownership at the end of May, we have seen a significant reduction in cancellations and improved reliability across the board. The resumption of driver rest day working (RDW) has helped move performance back towards where it needs to be and, during the 21 weeks RDW has been available, cancellations have dropped to an average figure of 7.25 per cent, a 65.8 per cent improvement to the six months before DOHL ownership.

“We know there is more to do, and our newly introduced December 2023 timetable will help to deliver more stability for our customers.”
