Peaky Blinders producer Caryn Mandabach Productions (CMP) is developing a historical drama series with BAFTA-nominated Elizabeth scribe Michael Hirst and End of the F***ing World director Jonathan Entwistle.

Civil Blood will be set in 17th century England, following the adventures of a young woman growing up in a time of war. Billed as a “mash-up of coming-of-age story with high-stakes action and world-changing ideas,” the project is written by Hirst and Cat Clarke, and is based on an original idea by the pair with Dario Poloni.

The show is in the latter stages of development, according to CMP.

Historical TV pioneer Hirst’s past credits include Vikings, Billy the Kid and the Oscar-nominated Elizabeth, while Clarke wrote on Good Omens and Ten Percent. Entwistle developed and directed Channel 4/Netflix hit The End of the F***ing World. He is also directing the new Karate Kid movie and worked on Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This and Apple TV+’s Hello Tomorrow.

“This script has history, heart, family and war – all wrapped up in a punk attitude,” said Entwistle. “This is a period of history not often explored, and certainly not from this point of view. There’s a sense of the American western in this world. At its heart is an iconic lead with a great pop sensibility – someone who thinks that history only happens to other people, until cataclysmic events bring history rushing in to the present.”

CMP Creative Director Jamie Glazebrook described Entwistle’s vision as “fresh, vibrant, indelible” and said Hirst and Clarke’s script is “provocative, deeply moving and profoundly entertaining.”

Last week, Peaky Blinders producer CMP optioned P.D. James‘ Cordelia Gray novels.
