The officer who arrested the Yorkshire Ripper has broken his silence following the end of TV drama The Long Shadow.
The seven-part series followed the impact of Peter Sutcliffe’s shocking crimes with the title making reference to the fear he cast over the region. Sutcliffe, known as The Yorkshire Ripper, was convicted of murdering 13 women between 1975 and 1980 in Yorkshire.
The Long Shadow, which focused on the lives of the victims rather than the man who ruined them, starred Toby Jones, Katherine Kelly, David Morrissey and Daniel Mays. As reported by the Mail Online, Bob Hydes was one of two officers who arrested Sutcliffe in Sheffield.

On January 2, 1981, PC Bob Hydes arrested Sutcliffe and helped bring to an end the six years of terror the monster brought to the region. Hydes, then 31, and veteran Sgt Bob Ring, 47, spotted Sutcliffe’s car parked in Sheffield’s red light area.
Mr Hydes, who rarely speaks about the arrest and Sutcliffe, said: “Sutcliffe knew what he was doing. He lied repeatedly, and to the very final minutes of his being a free man. He was wicked and calculating.
“I rarely talk publicly about it as I don’t want to upset the victims’ families, but this is my record of those historic few days. As for me, I was simply doing the job I was required to do.”
Mr Hydes has been married to wife Kath for 52 years. He’s a father of two and a grandfather.
