In January 2020, royal fans were shocked as Harry and Meghan shared their exit statement via their social media platforms. Surprisingly, his family members were unaware of his decision, not even his brother, William.

While that set the template for their rift, royal insiders testified that the Prince of Wales and his wife, Kate, were relieved when the Sussexes relinquished their positions as senior members of the family.

However, the Queen’s reaction was different. She still extended warm regards to her grandson.

The Queen Truly Felt Hurt about Her Grandson’s Exit

Reportedly, an insider close to the Queen told royal author Katie Nicholl who wrote “The New Royals – Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown,” that the deceased royal did not like to think or talk about Harry and Meghan’s exit.

Harry suggested that the family enlist the help of an external mediator to help quell the tension. But this was a rather unexpected suggestion, as an insider claimed that the King was “bemused,” and Camilla spat into her tea.

Even though the Queen never liked to discuss the move, she regretted that the Sussexes were far away in the US with their kids, Archie and Lilibet.

This was because she could not spend her desired time with her grandkids. Following the Queen’s death on September 8, family members gathered from far and near to honor her.

On September 9, during his TV address, the King spoke about William and Kate’s new roles while acknowledging Harry and Meghan. He said:

While royal fans still speculated that the King had extended an Olive branch to the Sussexes, the brothers made a surprise appearance outside Windsor Castle the following day.

Much later, Harry and Meghan joined the family in a match. The King also granted his son the privilege of wearing his beloved military uniform to pay his last respect to the Queen.

Following the walkabout, including the brothers and their wives—reportedly, William had invited Harry to join him, many concluded that their shared grief would facilitate an easy reunion.

Author Jennie Bond focused on how it would have made the deceased feel. She explained that the Queen would have been “relieved and proud,” adding:

“If there is a positive legacy from this saddest of weeks, it is the sight of the Queen’s feuding grandsons William and Harry united, at last…It was the greatest gift the Queen could have hoped for.”

Bond mentioned that the last time the royal bonded publicly was in 2020, during the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey, which happened to be one of Harry’s last official duties.

In fact, the couple extended their stay in the UK, living in the Frogmore Cottage. But in the end, a close source to the couple revealed that they left the UK without a “peace deal.”

Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown stated that Harry’s new mode of operation, sharing intimate details about the royals in interviews, docuseries, and his plans to release a tell-all memoir, might contribute to their fears. She advised:

“Unless he does give up his book and these tell-all documentaries and stops doing the interviews, then there can be no trust.”

Royal author Nicholl wrote that Harry has been interested in settling the tension. The Sussexes even visited his father and the Queen Consort, Camilla, to “clear the air.”

Harry suggested that the family enlist the help of an external mediator to help quell the tension. But this was a rather unexpected suggestion, as an insider claimed that the King was “bemused,” and Camilla spat into her tea.

Although nothing is known about their next line of action, it is commendable that the royals found an avenue to fix the tense relationship while sharing an emotional and historic moment in their lives.
