Randy Travis Sings Again Years After Nearly Losing His Life – Wife Fought for Him When Doctors Gave Up

Randy Travis not only nearly lost his life but also his most precious gift of singing. Luckily, he had his last miracle left, his wife, to help him survive and find his way back to the music.

While an adorable couple, Randy Travis and his wife, Mary Davis, met when they were both still married to other people. But, their affair did not last behind secret doors forever.

Davis was the wife of Travis’ dentist. This affair came to light after Travis’ first wife, Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Hatcher, caught them.

The security cameras on the country singer’s bus gave them away. Then, in 2011 Hatcher and Travis divorced after almost a decade together.

ATTEMPTING TO BEAT THE ODDS

A few months after Travis and Davis got engaged in 2013, the music artist suffered viral cardiomyopathy causing him to have a stroke. This incident heavily affected his motor skills and speech, and he eventually went into a coma for around two months.

He spoke about how frustrated he was going through this process, saying he felt trapped in his body.

According to the doctors, he only had a 1% chance of living. Although he was in a coma, Travis was aware of his slight chances of survival as he could still hear people speaking.

As he wrote in his book “Forever and Ever, Amen: A Memoir of Music, Faith, and Braving the Storms of Life,” he could hear everything going on around him. This included conversations about possibly taking him off life support. Travis stated:

“You should always be careful what you say in a hospital room when a patient is unconscious or in a coma.”

As Travis said, the medical professionals thought it the right thing to do. But Mary came to his bedside and told him to give her a sign if he wanted to keep fighting. A single tear ran down his face — enough for her to keep rallying for her future husband’s life.

THE LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY

After months of silence, Travis eventually began appearing in public, first with a wheelchair and then with a walking stick. While his walking skills were improving, he reportedly still had a long way to go, struggling with verbal communication.

In his memoir, he spoke about how frustrated he was going through this process, saying he felt trapped in his body. However, out of everything, his one wish was to perform for a crowd again.

When they first got home after four months of hospital recovery, Davis recalled how her husband had to learn everything from scratch. She expressed that the two formed an intuitive version of communication over time because of his inability to talk. Davis said:

“He didn’t know what the TV remote was or what the telephone was. It takes you back to raising a child, and you start all over again.”

Despite the difficulty of the situation, Travis never acted like a victim. Davis herself did not wallow in pity, stating that she feels “blessed” to walk this path with him.

THE GLORY DAYS ARE FINALLY HERE

In a ceremonial embodiment of “in sickness and in health,” on March 21, 2015, the two got married under the radar. Speaking about her now-husband, Davis has said he is an inspiration to her.

This marriage was just the beginning of good things to come. The music artist had come a long way, with his wife saying he has improved massively since leaving the hospital.

Finally, his dream came true in 2016; he sang “Amazing Grace” in front of the “Country Music Hall of Fame” crowd. While his voice was not as perfect as it used to be, this considerable achievement proved much more important than perfection.

This appearance was not his last time gracing the stage. In 2017, at a country music venue called “Lil Reds’ Longhorn Saloon,” he sang one of his songs, “Forever and Ever, Amen,” to screaming fans.

The country fanatic has also joined TikTok to sing to his online followers. He has sung along with the likes of fellow singer Josh Turner. and Alexandra Kay in these short-form clips.

Another country star, Toby Keith, has been fighting his own health battles. He has been recovering from cancer at a rural ranch with his kids. Like Travis, his wife is right by his side.

The couple, who have been together for around four decades, took to social media in July of 2022 to break the tragic news: their fans’ favorite country artist had stomach cancer. At that point, he had undergone all kinds of intensive treatment for six months.

When CNN covered this sad news, they found that fans were deeply shocked at the news because Keith had been carrying on with his life as if nothing was wrong. The music artist had released a new album, was touring and was active on social media.

His wife, Tricia Lucus, has been weathering the storms beside her husband for many years. At the beginning of her husband’s music career, many urged her to encourage him to get a “real” job, but she supported his dreams, saying it was worth giving it a shot.

It turns out she made the right decision, with Keith’s estimated net worth at around $10 to $25 million, along with a farm and 40 horses, among others. But, the duo doesn’t only use their privilege for themselves.

The power couple also founded a non-profit together for children with cancer called “Ally’s House.” It was founded before Keith was diagnosed with cancer. Instead, they created the organization because one of Keith’s former bandmates’ daughters died from the disease.
