Daniel Brettig’s lunch report as Australia chase victory
By Daniel Brettig
A firm counterpunching stand between Mitch Marsh and Alex Carey has given Australia a chance at lunch on day four of the Christchurch Test. Both Marsh and Carey have had plenty of good fortune in their stand of 94, after Travis Head was out in the second over of the day. At that stage Marsh had already been dropped by Rachin Ravindra at point the previous ball, and he has carried on in the company of Carey, who has played with a good deal of intelligence. Carey was given out lbw off the bowling of the excellent Matt Henry, but was reprieved on review as the ball was angling past leg stump. And Marsh survived a Glenn Phillips lbw review in the final over of the session when the third umpire Michael Gough judged the allrounder to have got an inside edge before he was struck on the boot in front of the stumps.

Carey makes 50 as Australia score freely
Alex Carey has scored a half-century in a 90-run partnership with Mitchell Marsh (51) as they reduced Australia’s victory target to 109 after 42 overs. Carey survives another review as Marsh scores 50
New Zealand burnt a review appealing for a caught behind against Alex Carey on 37. Carey tried to glide a short ball from Scott Kuggeleijn over the slips. There was an appeal for caught behind and New Zealand captain Tim Southee asked for a review but replays showed the ball clearly missed the bat.
In the following over Mitch Marsh brought up his half-century with a trademark pull over mid-wicket. It was a welcome contribution after ducks in his previous two innings.
Carey dominates 50 partnership with Marsh
Alex Carey has played positively to bring up a 50 partnership with Mitch Marsh as Australia chase an unlikely victory in Christchurch. After 38 overs Carey was 33 and Mitch Marsh, who was dropped seven balls into the day’s play, was 47, with Australia still needing 140.
Review saves Carey
Alex Carey has survived an lbw decision after being given out by umpire Nitin Menon. Carey was 19 and Australia 5/116, still needing another 163 for victory, when Matt Henry brought a ball back sharply from outside the off stump. Carey looked out but the review showed the ball had moved too far and was missing leg stump.
Carey starts well in career-defining innings
Alex Carey has played positively following the early dismissal of his fellow South Australian Travis Head. Carey, 32, has had a difficult Test after getting out to a dreadful attempted sweep and then dropping a catch off Tom Latham later on day two. He has already been replaced in Australia’s one-day and Twenty20 teams by Josh Inglis, 29. After the 32nd over he had moved comfortably to 14 from 22 balls with Mitch Marsh 41 from 49 balls.
Head out after Marsh dropped
Travis Head is out to another poor shot, caught at point for 18 slashing the second ball of the second over of the day from Tim Southee straight to Will Young at point. The ball before Mitch Marsh was dropped at point by Rachin Ravindra playing the same shot.
And we’re back!
Mitch Marsh and Travis Head make their way out onto the ground, with playing starting an hour late after early rain. Matt Henry is bowling the first over of the day and needs one more wicket to claim ten for the match.
