Spoiled boy Ben thinks he can get away with anything just because he is the son of a wealthy banker. One day, he breaks his teacher’s window after receiving bad marks, only to be forced to move into her home the following day because his dad wants to teach him a lesson.

One day, the school principal announced the arrival of a new Literature teacher. “Class, Mrs. Adams will be coming in tomorrow to be your new Literature teacher. I expect everyone to give her a warm welcome and to behave well, as she previously worked at a prison and is a tough cookie,” she shared.

Upon hearing that she worked at a prison, the entire class looked at each other in fear. There was only one boy who wasn’t scared at all, and it was Ben. He scoffed and shook his head. “Let’s see her be strict with me,” he whispered to his seatmate and best friend, Liam.

Ben wasn’t worried about the strict teacher, because all teachers were nice to him. His father was one of the school’s top investors, and he always got special treatment because of it.

The next day, Mrs. Adams entered the classroom looking fresh and friendly. She was soft-spoken and seemed like a pushover to Ben. “That’s the teacher they told us to be scared about? She looks like she couldn’t even hurt a fly,” he teased.

Without fuss, Mrs. Adams taught her lesson on Shakespeare patiently so that everyone could understand what she was talking about. She asked the class to prepare for a short quiz before the end of their session, which prompts everyone to take notes and listen intently.

Meanwhile, Ben couldn’t be bothered about the lesson. He thought literature was boring, and he refused to listen. Instead, he doodled in his notebook while everyone else was preparing for their test.

When it was finally time for the test, Ben couldn’t understand anything. He struggled to get any of the answers right, but he assumed the teacher would mark his test with high scores as all the other teachers did.

During their next literature period, Mrs. Adams returned all the papers. She commended all those who received As, and Ben expected to be one of them. When he wasn’t called, he walked to the front to get his paper and saw that she had given him an F.

“Do better next time, Ben,” Mrs. Adams called out. Ben’s grip tightened on the paper and it started to crumple. She was the first and only teacher who had ever given him an F, and he couldn’t accept it.

Ben went home in time for dinner, where his dad asked him how school was going. The boy didn’t hesitate to share that the new teacher gave him his only failing mark. “She gave me an F! She’s so unfair!” he cried out.

Furious at Mrs. Adams for embarrassing him in front of his father, Ben took a brick from the ground and threw it at her window.

Ben’s dad, Patrick, couldn’t believe that his son got an F because he was always an honor student. He assured his son that he would pay the principal a visit the next day. Ben was satisfied and thought the teacher would be given a tough lesson on who not to mess with.

True to his word, Patrick visited his son’s principal the following day. “My son said he was treated unfairly in his literature class yesterday. He received a failing mark – his very first!” he complained.

The principal smiled and shared that Mrs. Adams was being fair to Ben like she was being fair to all other students. “Here is the test,” the principal says, taking it out from a folder. “If you read through it, it was only right that Mrs. Adams gave him a low mark.”

Upon reading the test answers, Patrick was disappointed that Ben chose not to answer any of the questions properly. The boy had mocked the literary work and had written nonsense.

Patrick left the school disappointed. The principal saw this and tried to speak to Mrs. Adams to give Ben good grades so that Patrick didn’t pull out his investments from the school. Mrs. Adams thought this was unfair, and told the principal that the only way for Ben to learn was for him to get the grades he truly deserved.

That evening, Ben discovered that his dad had found out the truth about his test. “You didn’t put any effort into doing well in that test!” Patrick accused. “How can you expect her to give you a good grade when you wrote nonsense?” he asked his son.

Ben’s face turned red hot. He was angry that his father had learned the truth. He wanted to take revenge on his new teacher, so he followed her to her house after school the next day, and learned that she lived in a poor block filled with worn-out trailers and container houses.

Furious at Mrs. Adams for embarrassing him in front of his father, Ben took a brick from the ground and threw it at her window. When he did, he noticed a startled girl in a wheelchair looking straight at him. The girl did not get hit, though she almost did.

The boy instantly regretted his actions but ran away in fear of the punishment he’d get if anyone saw him there. Unfortunately for him, it was too late. The damage had already been done.

Patrick waited for Ben outside their front door. Ben instantly knew that Patrick had heard about what had happened. “How dare you try to hurt another person, Ben!” his father yelled. “I didn’t raise you to be a menace!”

“I’m sorry,” Ben said, afraid of his father.

“Sorry won’t cut it! I know you don’t mean it. I’ve packed your bags. You’re going to live with Mrs. Adams to fix her window and to take care of her daughter until you finally learn your lesson,” he said, throwing Ben’s bag on the floor. “Now, go!”

Ben cried upon realizing that his dad was serious. “Dad, I’ve learned my lesson!” he said. “Please don’t send me to her house,” he begged.

Patrick refused to listen and told Ben to go straight to Mrs. Adams’ house to apologize. He did and was afraid of how his teacher would treat him after finding out about what he did.

To his surprise, Mrs. Adams was incredibly warm toward him. “I worked at a prison,” she reminded him. “I’ve seen and experienced worse. I forgive you, son,” she said.

Upon entering her house, he was surprised to see that she had a disabled daughter who needed a wheelchair to get around. “This is Clarissa,” she introduced.

Every day, Ben would go home with Mrs. Adams and help take care of Clarissa. After days of talking to one another, Ben and Clarissa become good friends. They followed one another on Instagram, and the young girl’s page showed that just a year prior, she could still walk.

“I hope you don’t mind me asking, but what happened?” he asked her.

“My mom had a husband – my stepdad,” Clarissa started to share. “He had always been strict towards us, but after a while, he started to become more and more aggressive. My mom didn’t want to be around him, so we skipped town. When we did, we got into an accident when a driver fell asleep at the wheel and hit us head-on,” she explained.

“My stepdad found out about the accident and refused to pay for any of our treatments because he knew we were running away from him. ‘That’s karma for you,’ he used to tell us,” Clarissa shook her head. “I need spinal surgery for me to walk again, but my mom can’t afford it just yet,” she shared.

Ben instantly felt bad that Clarissa had gone through so much at her young age. They might as well have been classmates, as they were the same age. He couldn’t imagine having to go through what she did.

That evening, Ben called his father and asked him for money. He shared Clarissa’s story, and Patrick instantly knew that his son had learned his lesson. Patrick promised to help Clarissa out and told Ben that he could come home.

After a couple of weeks, Clarissa was able to undergo surgery, thanks to Patrick. He covered all costs of her hospitalization and expected nothing in return. When she got home, Ben visited her every day to help her recover. She would have dinner with Clarissa and Mrs. Adams, who would also give Ben extra classes for him to properly learn his lessons.

Soon, Ben’s teachers no longer needed to fake his grades. He became a stellar student and finally got the As that he actually truly deserved. He also started to respect his teachers after realizing that they were doing such a noble job.
