In late August 2015, Lucy Liu made headlines after welcoming her first son, Rockwell Lloyd, through surrogacy. Shortly after the baby was born, Liu took to Instagram to share a photo of herself tenderly cradling her son.

The baby news surprised friends and fans because Liu had always kept her private life out of the spotlight. Almost no one knew about her surrogate’s pregnancy, and her non-traditional road to motherhood was a bombshell.

Born on December 2, 1968, in New York City, Lucy Liu earned a degree in Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of Michigan before she became involved in acting. Her breakthrough role came when she was cast as the vicious lawyer Ling Woo in the hit series “Ally McBeal.”

You don’t have to have a traditional family. It’s how you love your family.

As her career blossomed with roles in films like the “Charlie’s Angels” series with Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz and TV series like “Elementary” and “Why Women Kill,” Liu always refused to comment on her personal life until she made the explosive announcement that she had become a mother in 2015.

Why Lucy Liu Chose Surrogacy

The actress attributed her decision to have a child through surrogacy to her hectic work schedule. Liu was 47 at the time of Rockwell’s birth, which might have been a factor. She said:

“It just seemed like the right option for me because I was working, and I didn’t know when I was going to be able to stop. I decided that was probably the best solution for me, and it turned out to be great.”

She shared that she found herself entranced from the moment she saw Rockwell and felt as if she’d taken a love potion during the first few months of motherhood because she was “totally in love.”

How Lucy’s Life Changed after Rockwell Lloyd’s Arrival

At first, being a new mom wasn’t easy, but as time passed, she became accustomed to the lifestyle changes and organized her rigorous schedule around her baby. Liu also pointed out that she had “a lot of help” so Rockwell could be comfortable with and without her.

During those early years, Rockwell Lloyd lived according to his mom’s work plan, too. In the mornings, Liu would take him to rehearsals, and he would be with her during hair and makeup. When Liu had to go on set, she’d hand Rockwell over to his nurse, who’d care for him the day.

According to the “Charlie’s Angels” star, that schedule was good as Rockwell could see different faces. In another, the actress pointed out that she didn’t realize people were critical of how she expanded her family until her friends told her about it.

Rockwell’s Fifth Birthday

All the negativity didn’t stop the actress from collaborating with Tylenol on their “How We Family” campaign, which focused on showing people that there’s not just one right way to have a family. She said:

“Tylenol is encouraging other people to share their stories and say, ‘You don’t have to have a traditional family. It’s how you love your family.'”

In August 2020, Lucy Liu and Rockwell Lloyd made headlines again after the actress shared a rare photo of him on social media in honor of his fifth birthday. The post showed Rockwell wearing a white shirt, red shorts, and a colorful birthday hat while blowing out his birthday candle. The actress described Rockwell as a “rainbow of light.”

Lucy Once Shared The Meaning Of Rockwell’s Name

The actress revealed the origin of her son’s unusual name. Liu was on location filming and saw a store called “Rockwell,” and the name struck her as perfect, so she tucked it away in the back of her mind until her son was born. She said:

“I know a lot of people are like, ‘Oh, that’s a surname.’ But I think sometimes surnames are stronger than first names.”

As for Rockwell, he seems to like his name. The actress revealed that when he was four years old, he firmly corrected an adult who addressed him as Rocky.
