Rudy Pankow Didn’t Have Abusive Parents Like His ‘Outer Banks’ Character JJ

The Netflix series “Outer Banks,” now in its third season, follows a group of teens looking for treasure and dealing with social issues between the wealthy and the poor residents of a small coastal town in North Carolina.

While Pankow’s empathy helped him understand JJ, his reality is very different.

Pankow’s character JJ Maybank has been John B’s best friend since the third grade and is staunchly loyal. JJ tends to be erratic, volatile, impulsive, and has a terrible secret.

His father, a drug addict, and an alcoholic, is physically and psychologically abusive. JJ’s mother left the family, and his father blames him for it.

JJ’s reckless devil-may-care attitude is a mask to hide the pain he’s going through. Pankow said JJ forced him to dig deep and to portray his mental and emotional agony. He said:

“When you are playing a character like JJ, you feel a certain responsibility to portray that character as organic and real because of the people in the world that are actually going through this.”
