Without a word, Melissa Barrera boldly declared the beginning of her blonde era on the April cover of Glamour México y Latinoamérica. Fans’ acceptance of the dramatic new color has been as slow as the box-office returns of “In The Heights.”

For Melissa Barrera, Monday was an “‘everybody’s blonde kinda day.” The caption from an Instagram post on April 3, 2023, makes sense when swiping to the second slide, where the former brunette poses with three similarly blonde members of her glam squad.

An Instagram user requested, “Please black hair again,” punctuated by a dark-haired face-palm emoji Others were less tactful, “Dark hair [Melissa Barrera]. This blonde doesn’t fit for you,” and “Better brunette.”

A “Scream” super fan wrote, “U are stunning, but u look more unique with the black hair.” But another horror aficionado begged to differ, “Sam should be blonde in Scream 7.” And a fan gleefully commented with a heart-eye emoji, “Very much like my Barbie doll.”

Yet with all the success, she struggles to live in the moment and enjoy it.

A video editor had bigger plans, “There’s something about this blonde look that has me thinking you should be the new Bond. I need a spy film from Miss Barrera! It’s important!!” The look affected one commenter’s ability to function, “I forgot to breathe for a moment there.”

Melissa Barrera Can Already Tick Items from Her ‘Bucket List’

Barrera confided in Byrdie in June 2021 that making more musicals like “In The Heights,” where she co-stars opposite Anthony Ramos, was on her professional “bucket list.” She can also see herself doing an action movie as she “loves training and having to learn a new skill for a role.”

For 2022’s “Keep Breathing,” the rising star, born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, got her scuba certification, did cold water immersion, and trained how to hold her breath as they filmed the series in extreme conditions.

Audiences will see the Tisch musical theatre alum in an unconventional musical with Paul Mescal in “Carmen” later this month. “Scream IV,” Melissa Barrera‘s second turn in the rebooted 90s horror franchise, has made $44.5 million in its opening weekend, proving her worth as a box-office draw.

Yet with all the success, she struggles to live in the moment and enjoy it. She told PEOPLE, “My mom is always there to remind me to pat myself on the back, hug myself and speak to myself in the mirror to congratulate myself on how far I’ve come. I’m trying to change my mentality.”
