A feature film adaptation of Shucked, the corny (that’s a compliment) pun-filled Broadway musical comedy, is in development, according to the show’s Broadway producer Mike Bosner.

Bosner made the announcement last night during the curtain call of Shucked‘s final performance, saying, “We’re all a little sad to say goodbye to this, but there’s some good news. We don’t have to say goodbye just yet, because we will be making a feature film of Shucked.” Watch video of the announcement below.

The Broadway production’s representatives tell Deadline that Mandalay Pictures will produce the feature film adaptation, with Air producer Jason Michael Berman and executive producer Jordan Moldo on board as producers on behalf of Mandalay Pictures, along with Alan Fox.

Composers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, book writer Robert Horn, stage director Jack O’Brien are Executive Producers. Horn will write the screenplay.

Shucked, which was Broadway’s big surprise last spring when critics fell in love with the secretly sophisticated cornpone humor. Audiences, too, were in on the joke, though attendance eventually dwindled. The musical closed at the Nederlander Theatre yesterday after playing 28 previews and 327 regular performances.

Nominated for eight Tony Awards, the production took home the trophy for Best Featured Actor/Musical for Alex Newell’s star-making turn.

In addition to the film, a North American tour will be launching this fall in Nashville, with announced Australian and London productions in the works.

The original Broadway cast album has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

Additional details, including production dates and casting, were not immediately available. Deadline is reaching out to Mandalay for more details.
