EXCLUSIVE: The writers room for the new MGM+/Prime Video series Silk: Spider Society is tentatively slated to reconvene in mid to late January, sources tell Deadline.

It would be one of the last series whose writers rooms were up and running when the WGA strike started May 2 to reopen.

The delay prompted WGAW to notify Amazon Studios last month “that their failure to recommence a number of writing rooms after the strike is a violation of the Strike Termination Agreement (STA) between the WGA and AMPTP and Article 7 of the MBA,” the guild told Deadline in a statement, adding that “studios are obligated to return writers to work ‘upon termination of the strike,” which happened Sept. 27, and that “the Guild will bring legal action against Amazon and any other studio that violates the STA to recover compensation, interest on late payments, and benefit contributions due as a result of the delay.”

According to sources, Amazon Studios brass have been evaluating the script material produced so far by the writing team, led by series showrunner Angela Kang, the Walking Dead veteran who was signed into an overall deal when she joined the project a year ago. The tentative writers room start date is contingent on that and may change, I hear.

Silk: Spider Society is the first from a suite of Spider-Man universe series from Sony Pictures Television for both MGM+ and Prime Video. MGM+ will have the first window in the U.S. and the series will then air on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service in the States. Internationally, the series will also air on the Amazon streamer in 240 countries and territories.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse pair Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who oversee Sony TV’s efforts exploiting the studio-controlled comic book characters, exec produce Silk with Kang and Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal.

Silk: Spider Society is based on characters created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos and inspired by the Marvel comics. It follows Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, as she escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk.
