Single Man Sacrifices Career to Adopt Abandoned Non-verbal Boy — He Starts Talking Due to Dad’s Love

A man faced many obstacles growing up and worked hard to build a better life. He desperately wanted a family, but his fatherhood journey was not easy. For the selfless man, every challenge was worth it after meeting the boy who forever changed his world.

Ruben Ramos was a man full of hope and ambition. He immigrated from Mexico and spent his childhood in Texas. His family was poor, and the youngster was ridiculed because he didn’t wear branded clothing or fancy shoes.

He ignored the bullies and used their teasing as motivation to do something significant with his life. He was the first person in his family to graduate high school and obtain a bachelor’s degree. However, his most outstanding achievement was still coming.

He Faced Many Struggles

By 29, Ruben was a proud Marketing Director, but something was missing. He wanted to be a father, and as a gay man, he considered adoption.

While Ruben had the support of his relatives, he faced the administrative struggles of adoption and fostering alone and was frustrated by the constant obstacles he encountered.

Sadly, providing Hector with a loving home was not as simple as the hopeful dad imagined.

The Meeting That Changed His Life

The man’s life changed forever when he met a young boy named Hector at an adoption event. Hector was non-verbal and had autism.

Despite his condition, Ruben instantly clicked with the little Mexican boy and wanted to give him a safe place to grow and dream. Hector stole his heart, and Ruben shared:

“I still remember the very first time I saw him. I remember what he was wearing, I remember the look in his eyes and how innocent he looked. I couldn’t stop looking at him.”

Terminating His Foster License

Sadly, providing Hector with a loving home was not as simple as the hopeful dad imagined. Ruben inquired about the abandoned boy and petitioned to adopt him. However, he discovered he was not selected to be his father—the news left him heartbroken.

He had his certification for fostering to adopt, but after two years of waiting to be selected, Ruben had not welcomed a child into his home. He had so much love to give but was starting to grow weary.

In January 2018, he decided to give up his foster license. The process was draining, and he knew it was not good for his mental health.

The Call He Always Dreamed about Receiving

Through the many disappointments, Ruben never forgot about little Hector. As he got ready to terminate his license, he received an unexpected call from his case worker. The dad explained:

“I still recall the words, ‘Mr. Ramos, do you remember Hector? Well, it didn’t work out with the family that was selected for him and his caseworker would like to know if you are still interested in him?'”

Ruben was shocked but instantly said yes. Three days later, the little child arrived at his doorstep, and it was the start of their life together.

The Dad Made Many Sacrifices for Love

There were many sacrifices the dad had to make so he could meet all of his son’s needs. Ruben was overwhelmed but knew he was not willing to lose his boy.

While Hector was asleep one night, his dad vowed to love him no matter what obstacles came their way. They were resilient and built a relationship on love.

Ruben eventually quit his job, which once gave him purpose and joy. It was not an easy decision, but it was worth it. He walked away from his career and took on a new title. On August 14, 2020, his formal adoption of Hector was official. He said:

“The title of a father is given. The title of dad is earned.”

An Unforgettable Moment That Left Him Sobbing

Little Hector was overjoyed and glad to have found his forever home. After receiving the good news, he ran to his dad, hugged him, and stated: “I love you so much. I love you so, so much.”

Another unforgettable moment occurred when Ruben dropped Hector at school. He called him “dad” for the first time, and the doting father expressed:

“After pulling over and sobbing like a child in the parking lot for about 15 minutes, I knew that was the most valuable, most meaningful achievement of my entire life and there was no turning back.”

Love Changed Their Lives Forever

Earning the title of dad cost Ruben his hair, job, and almost his sanity, but he would not have done things differently. Thanks to his love, the little boy’s world changed. He started singing, performed well at school, and spoke loudly.

Love made all the difference, and people couldn’t believe Hector was the same shy and timid boy they once knew. While many praised Ruben for all he did for his son, the dad felt differently.

He felt lucky because someone as unique as Hector chose him. Their journey was anything but effortless, but they gained so much, and the proud father added:

“In 2020, I experienced multiple losses. I lost my dog, job, and relationships. But through the chaos, I also experienced and gained unconditional love. No year can take [that] away from me. This is courage, love, strength, and resilience. This is happiness.”

The dad gained the opportunity to be a better human and was thankful for every moment he shared with his child. Despite the struggles he had gone through in his life, Ruben was a positive and inspiring example of how to make good things happen.
