Sophia Rosalinda Bratt, Benjamin Bratt’s daughter, has struggled with disabilities her whole life, leaving her parents feeling like they were “in a tunnel of darkness.” However, Benjamin and his wife set out on a mission to ensure their daughter had all the help she could get.

Benjamin rose to stardom in the 2000s after landing roles in well-known films such as “Traffic,” “Miss Congeniality,” and “Despicable Me 2.” After a highly publicized relationship with Julia Roberts, he found love again with Bond Girl Talisa Soto, and the couple married in 2002.

Off-screen, Benjamin’s most important role is that of a father to Sophia and her brother. She appears on her father’s social media from time to time, who revealed that his entire personal and professional life centered around his daughter’s needs.

Sophia was born in New York City on December 6, 2002, after her parents met on the set of the biopic about Miguel Pinero, “Pinero,” in 2001. Reports about her birth revealed that she came into the world weighing 7 pounds, and in 2008, her father opened up about her disabilities.

The “Private Practice” actor revealed that Sophia had suffered a brain injury when she was born that left her with physical disabilities. Dumbfounded, Sophia’s parents felt like they were trapped in “a tunnel of darkness” for years.

The couple, who initially had no idea what to do, educated themselves and found the best therapists they could, and Benjamin noted that Sophia began to make great strides. He said:

“[She] understands everything, she’s quick to laugh, she’s loving and a physically beautiful child.”

In 2008, Benjamin’s career saw a change when he took a break from the silver screen and picked up a project on the small screen in order to be home more. He knew he could not “be a great husband and father — especially the father of a child with special needs” if he was not around as much.

Although he was excited about his new drama series “The Cleaner” in 2008, Benjamin was not always able to be home due to the nature of his profession. That’s when his hero—his wife—came in.

During an interview in 2022, Benjamin shared that his and his wife’s personal and professional lives revolved around Sophia’s needs. Over the years, the family had moved as many as fifteen times in search of the best therapists, schooling, and social situations for Sophia.

As their daughter was on the cusp of being in her twenties, Benjamin and his wife were on a mission to help Sophia gain independence.

In New York, Sophia attended a transition program that assisted her in using money, buying groceries, cooking for herself, folding and putting away her clothes, and all the chores of her adult life.

Although he was excited about his new drama series “The Cleaner” in 2008, Benjamin was not always able to be home due to the nature of his profession. That’s when his hero—his wife—came in. He said:

“Raising children, especially one who is as challenged as our daughter is physically and emotionally exhausting. My wife carries the brunt of it because when I go off to work, she is left behind. She’s my hero.”

Sophia Rosalinda Has a Younger Brother Named Mateo

In 2005, Benjamin Bratt and his wife announced that they were expecting their second child, and on October 3, 2005, their son Mateo Bravery was born.

During an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Benjamin joked about Mateo’s developing personality and how he could not be turned off. “And you can’t give him away, unfortunately,” he humorously added.

It was all hands on deck in the Bratt/Soto household, and Benjamin revealed that Mateo was also a great help in encouraging Sopia and pushing her along when they were children.
