Susan Sarandon is an actress and political activist who has pledged support to various political causes over the years.

On May 8, 2023, Sarandon was arrested in New York State Capitol in Albany. Sarandon was protesting in support of fair wages for restaurant workers. The “Snitch” star was arrested alongside eight other people, including New York lieutenant governor candidate Ana Maria Archila.

Sarandon and those arrested were booked, given appearances tickets, and released. The actress was detained while advocating against legislation that would raise the minimum wage of tipped restaurant workers.

The pending legislation will allow New York leaders to increase the state’s minimum wage to $17 per hour. Sarandon was protesting because, according to One Fair Wage, tipped workers are excluded from the legislation.

The legislation may be harmful to workers, as when a similar wage increase happened in 2016, several employees suffered a 25% decline in their income.

On the day of the arrest, Sarandon was caught on camera in handcuffs, being escorted away by a police officer. Human rights advocate Steven Donziger shared the actress’s picture on Instagram.

Donziger condemned the arrest, “I find it repugnant that we must battle for a living wage in the wealthiest nation on earth.” Several people commented on Donziger’s post of Sarandon, calling her a “hero.” One user commented on Sarandon’s courage:

“Always speaking up on behalf of the Wellbeing and Welfare for others, a true spokeswoman for Humanity. ~May we all be Free to Work for what we Need to Feed Our Families.”

Social media users also praised the Oscar-winning actress for her outstanding movies and the good work she does as a human rights activist:

“She could probably book herself into jail at this point, she’s had enough experience… a good lady who fights the good fight and makes fabulous movies. Rocky Horror. Thelma & Louise. Bull Durham. Atlantic City.”

Sarandon’s activism is not a one-time thing, as she was spotted in 2018 protesting against immigration policies, and recently, she marched in support of writers in New York during the writer’s strike.

In New York City, Sarandon landed roles such as the Janet Weiss character she played in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” a 1975 horror-mystery film. The actress then divorced Chris, she said, “He wasn’t a mean person. It was just about choosing myself.”

The “Stepmom” actress is a mother of three. She had her first child, actress Eva Amurri, 38, with Italian director Franco Amurri. She then had two more children with actor Tim Robins. These kids are director Jack Henry Robbins, 33, and musician and actor Miles Robbins, 31.

Sarandon’s daughter Amurri praised her parenting, noting that her mother was great at balancing work and motherhood while at the same time giving back to society. “She made our Halloween costumes and was at our basketball and soccer games,” Amurri revealed.

As for her personal life, the actress swore never to get married again. However, she noted that she was open to a new romance. She added that the window to find love again may have closed, but she was “forever hopeful” but “not desperate”:

“I would like to have a travel companion, male, female — age doesn’t matter, but I would like to find someone who’s up for an adventure kind of attitude. And also, who cares about something passionately and who loves what they do, whatever that is.”

The actress said even as she hopes for romance in her life, she was pretty happy making memories with her children.
