The Importance of Romance in Dating

There are many stages to dating and relationships, with each causing great anxiety and fear in people who are single.

Whether you’re looking for someone to date on a dating app, hoping to continue connecting with a person you met recently, or in a relationship for a few months, you may want to know if you’re going about your romantic relationships properly.

Every couple is unique in their habits and desires. Some may enjoy a romantic weekend at home, while other couples want to spend most of their time outside exploring the world.

Regardless of your preferences, you must know about the importance of romance when dating. Without romance, you’re unlikely to have a successful long-term relationship or marriage with a person you’re dating.

Below is a rundown of how and why romance matters while dating.

Romance is essential

Without romance, you’re not in a romantic relationship with the other person, but in a friendship or living arrangement. Romance in a relationship should never be trivialized, as it may be the one aspect of your bond that will keep you together when times get tough.

Understanding the importance of affection is the first step in getting the love that you deserve. Whether you’re bouncing back after a few tough relationships, or you’ve not dated properly in the past, you should be aware that romance is critical to a successful relationship.

Romance does not have to be an all-encompassing grand gesture from the other person, such as saying they love you in a public setting. Romance can be small acts that take place on the most mundane or routine of days.

Perhaps your partner makes small gestures that show how much they care about you. Maybe they bring you the coffee that you enjoy drinking when they’re at your favorite cafe, or they prepare a meal for the both of you that includes your favorite food. Such gestures are not always thought of as romance, but they are indeed very much romantic in nature.

Stay true to yourself

Dating another person doesn’t mean you have to let go of parts of yourself. Even if you have to adjust your routine or habits to accommodate your partner, don’t lose sight of your personality, desires, hobbies, and professional goals.

You can be a committed romantic partner without giving up your identity in the process.

Show you care about them

If you’re hesitant or shy about sharing your feelings or performing grand gestures, you don’t need to go so far out of your comfort zone just to appear romantic. A great way to express that you have romantic feelings is through the written word.

You could write a letter to someone you’ve recently started dating, send them an affectionate email, or even text them sentences that indicate your feelings. Such acts of romance are easier for first-time daters or people who are experiencing trauma from past relationships.

Sometimes you can show affection and romance without even needing to say anything. Always being there for the other person, listening to them if they have a tough day, or taking proactive measures to help them with a personal or professional problem can all be romantic gestures.

Create a romantic moment

There are circumstances when the grand gesture may be the most appropriate way to showcase your romantic intentions or feelings. If you feel as though your relationship is stagnating, or your partner is going through a tough time, you may want to surprise them with a major romantic gesture or moment.

One option is to book a vacation for the two of you to a romantic destination that you’ve always talked about. You could even plan to stay at a bed-and-breakfast in a nearby town as a nice change from your weekly routine.

Go at your own pace

Don’t compare your relationship to that of a co-worker, friend, or family member. Even if you’re extremely happy with the person you’re dating, it doesn’t mean you have to rush into taking the next step or declaring your love.

Each relationship is unique, and you can proceed at your own pace. Do ensure, however, that you are using romantic words and gestures to remind your partner that you do care about them as more than friends or casual dating partners.
