EXCLUSIVE: The Super Mario Bros. Movie has set its Netflix premiere date for the U.S., Deadline has learned, amidst a continuing presence on Peacock, where it debuted in August. The record-breaking film from Universal and Illumination premieres on the platform December 3rd, there joining a slate of titles with which the whole family can engage.
With the holidays on the horizon, it’s the time of year when locking down titles of this sort is critical, given the promise of a huge surge in viewership. In 2022, family-friendly series and films were in the Top 10 TV or Film lists in 59 countries every week from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Throughout the same period, family-friendly films also made up at least three of the global Top 10 English Films each week.
Other family-friendly fare soon to debut on Netflix includes Best. Christmas. Ever! (November 16), Adam Sandler’s animated pic Leo (November 21), The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday (November 30), Family Switch (November 30), Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (December 15), and Pokémon Concierge, which premieres in December.
Based on Shigeru Miyamoto’s beloved Nintendo games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an origin story for our two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario (Chris Pratt), the brave one with the “let’s-a go” attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi (Charlie Day), who would prefer to go nowhere. We open with the Super Mario Brothers reckoning with their struggling plumbing business, and wind up in a whirlwind adventure through Mushroom Kingdom. Through their journey, we meet a cast of familiar, lovable characters, ultimately uniting together to defeat the power-hungry villain, Bowser (Jack Black).
Also starring Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco and more, the film was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Pierre Leduc and Fabien Polack as co-directors. Scripted by Matthew Fogel, it was produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Miyamoto, with Brett Hoffman, Bill Ryan, and Yusuke Beppu serving as EPs. Following its April debut in theaters, the film went on to gross over $1.36 billion worldwide. In addition to the second-highest-grossing title of the year to date, it’s now the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, as well as the third-highest grossing animated film in history.
