TLC Forever: A New Lifetime Documentary

TLC is undoubtedly one of the greatest girl groups of all time, and more than three decades since their debut, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas are looking back on their prolific careers with a new Lifetime documentary titled “TLC Forever.” While the documentary will touch on the group’s historic success, it will also cover their biggest downfalls, including “internal fallouts, external attacks, bankruptcy, and illness,” that threatened to destroy the trio. The documentary will also examine the death of TLC member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in 2002.

According to The New York Times, Lopes died in a car accident on April 25, 2002, just weeks before her 31st birthday. Lopes was filming a documentary in Honduras at the time of her death. She was driving a Mitsubishi Montero SUV traveling from La Ceiba to San Pedro Sula when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed. The accident happened just three weeks after Lopes was involved in another fatal crash that took the life of a Honduran boy named Bayron Isaul Fuentes Lopez.

Despite the tragedy, Watkins and Thomas released the group’s fourth album, “3D,” six months after Lopes’s death in October 2002. Thomas stated in a USA Today interview (quoted by Biography), “We wanted to finish what the three of us had started as best as we could under that type of pressure and pain.” The duo continued as a duo and even released a fifth album, titled “TLC,” in June 2017. Today, the pair performs as TLC, and they recently kicked off their “Hot Summer Nights” tour, which they started on June 1.

The Lifetime documentary will explore the emotional journey Watkins and Thomas experienced in the wake of such a significant loss. While it will undoubtedly be hard to relive the pain, it will also pay tribute to the legacy created by TLC, a group that will always remain an essential part of girl group history. The documentary premieres on June 3, and it promises to be a must-see for anyone enamored with the trio’s smooth harmonies, fresh beats, and sultry vocals.
