Travellers have set up camp in a Yorkshire sports centre car park.
The illegal camp of parked caravans was spotted in Dewsbury Sport Centre, Longcauseway, this morning (Thursday, January 4). This comes just hours after travellers were evicted from Dewsbury Railway Station less than half a mile away.
Kirklees Council has triggered a legal process to remove the travellers from the site. The sports centre is currently closed for repair and maintenance.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance & Regeneration, said: “We were made aware earlier today of the traveller encampment outside the Dewsbury Sports Centre. Whenever we’re made aware of a traveller encampment on public land, there’s a legal process we need to follow in order to conduct a safe eviction.
“This process is now underway, and we are taking the necessary legal steps to evict the encampment. The sports centre is currently closed to the public due to repair and maintenance requirements.”
