According to reports, at least 12 persons perished and more than 12 more were injured in a stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. Union Minister Jitendra Singh arrived in Katra after learning of the tragedy and later issued a list of those who died as a result of the incident, stating that the victims were from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Jammu-Kashmir. Dheeraj Kumar, Vaneet Kumar, Dharmveer Singh, Sonu Pandey, Shweta Singh, Mamta, Viney Kumar, and Arun Pratap Singh are eight of the twelve victims. On Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the deaths at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and offered his condolences to the families of those who died, writing, “extremely saddened by the deaths due to the bustle at the shrine and my condolences are with their families and may the injured recover soon.” The PM also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to each family who lost a loved one, as well as a payment of Rs 50k from PMNRF to those who were injured in the tragedy. While the Lt. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir announced relief compensation of Rs 10 lakh for those who lost a family member and Rs 2 lakh for those injured in the stampede.
