Due to a large influx of people on the first day of the year 2022, there was a sudden mass panic at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on Saturday. Devotees typically trek 13 kilometres from Katra’s base camp to the hilltop shrine, while some use airlifts to go to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. According to reports, at least 12 persons perished and more than 12 more were injured in a stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. According to Dilbag Singh, Director-General of Police, there was a little squabble among some young men, which resulted in the stampede at the shrine. Officials also stated that they were quick to respond to the commotion, but the harm had already been done. At 2.30 a.m., the event occurred at the shrine’s third gate. The sanctum is located at the top of Trikuta Hill, roughly 50 kilometres from Jammu. According to the report, 12 people died in the stampede, and their bodies were transported to the base camp for identification. Those who were bruised as a result of the stampede were taken to Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital for treatment, but two of the fifteen injured are in critical condition.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh arrived in Katra after learning of the tragedy and later issued a list of those who died as a result of the incident, stating that the victims were from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Jammu-Kashmir. Dheeraj Kumar, Vaneet Kumar, Dharmveer Singh, Sonu Pandey, Shweta Singh, Mamta, Viney Kumar, and Arun Pratap Singh are eight of the twelve victims. Yatra was put on hold for a while following the event, however it was later restarted.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the deaths at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and offered his condolences to the families of those who died, writing, “extremely saddened by the deaths due to the bustle at the shrine and my condolences are with their families and may the injured recover soon.” The PM also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to each family who lost a loved one, as well as a payment of Rs 50k from PMNRF to those who were injured in the tragedy. While the Lt. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir announced relief compensation of Rs 10 lakh for those who lost a family member and Rs 2 lakh for those injured in the stampede.
