A Rotherham man who used a barbell to attack an elderly man has been put behind bars.
Robert Wilcox, 55, of St Johns Avenue in Rotherham has been jailed for two-and-a-half years after admitting assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and criminal damage.
Sheffield Crown Court heard last Friday that Wilcox – who knew his victim – went to his house and the pair talked, but he suddenly became aggressive and attacked the man, who is in his 70s.
Wilcox pinned him down on the kitchen floor while he repeatedly punched him and made threats. The victim repeatedly pleaded with violent Wilcox to stop as he feared he would die. At one point during the sickening attack, Wilcox used a barbell to hit him over the head multiple times.
Some time later, Wilcox went into the living room and began to punch the man’s TV before fleeing the scene, leaving him dazed and in severe pain lying on the floor. The man said he has been left with extremely painful injuries and is now fearful of leaving the house.
Investigating officer Rachel Scott for South Yorkshire Police said: “Wilcox carried out such a violent and aggressive attack on his victim, knowing full well that he was unable to defend himself and using his power and strength to terrorise and threaten the victim. He took complete advantage, leaving the man fearing for his life not knowing if and when the attack would stop.
“I am pleased that Wilcox will now face time behind bars, and we are now working very closely with the victim to help support him so that he can find closure and rebuild his life following this dreadful attack.”
