Asian hornets have been found in Yorkshire, sparking a warning over the invasive and dangerous species.

Unlike their tame British counterparts, Asian hornets are extremely bad news as they prey on and kill bees and bumblebees, meaning they threaten to wipe out the UK’s pollinators and with it, the UK’s food supply, if left unchecked.

Just a few weeks ago, experts warned that the invasive hornets could move north after jumping from France. Now the bee hunting hornets have been found in Yorkshire.

Stark warning over Asian Hornets during heatwave

This week, there was a confirmed sighting of the hornet in Yarm, in Stockton-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, according to Cleveland Beekeepers Association.

A nest was then found close to the River Tees and experts are rushing to have the nest destroyed and removed as soon as possible.

Dhonn Atkinson, posting on the Cleveland Beekeepers Association Facebook page, said: “My team have found the nest this morning and plans for its destruction and Removal are underway. Please remain vigilant, Dhonn NE RBI”

There was also another ‘credible sighting’ in Egglescliffe on September 20 and the area nearby is now being monitored.

There were just two sightings in 2021 and 2022 but the National Bee Unit (NBU) said there have been 54 nests found this year.

The CBA said: “We are pleased to report that the team of Bee Indsectors successfully identified the location of the Asian hornet next in our area. The nest will be destroyed next week.”

The spokesperson added that the find was a ‘wake up call’ and asked people to be vigilant for Asian hornets and to report any sightins via this app: https://apps.apple.com/…/asian-hornet-watch/id1161238813

It should be noted that regular wasps and hornets pose no danger and should be allowed to roam free to help pollinate flowers – it’s just Asian hornets which pose a threat to our vital native bee populations.
