Residents watched in horror as flames destroyed a disused school in New Mill, Holmfirth.
Eight fire engines and dozens of firefighters were called to deal with a huge fire from just after midnight which engulfed the former Lydgate School which is near to New Mill Infant School in Kirkroyds Lane, New Mill. The fire destroyed the Lydgate School building which was disused and boarded up. The school itself closed several years ago. Kirkroyds Lane was closed by police for a time but has since reopened.
Robin Ferguson, watch commander at Huddersfield fire station, spoke to YorkshireLive at the scene on Saturday morning. He said: “It started on the right hand side of the building. The fire investigation officer and crime scenes investigation are on scene now currently investigating the cause of the fire.”

The watch commander said 95% of the building had been destroyed. There were no reports of any injuries.
“The roof and the ceiling from 95% of it has burnt and fallen in on itself. The plant room and the old kitchen is the only bit unaffected by the fire.”
Detectives with Kirklees CID, crime scene investigation personnel and a fire service investigator attended the scene on Saturday. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers were liaising with the fire service to establish what caused the fire. No arrests have been made at present.
