One of the great joys of Christmas is that we all have our different traditions.

For some, the festive season doesn’t start until the first airing of the Coca-Cola Truck advert while for others it is a visit to a Christmas market. For me, that Christmas magic really hits when taking in a panto.

I can bore you with how important I believe it is an introduction to theatre for little ones. But instead, I’ll just tell you that Bradford’s 2023 offering, starring Emmerdale’s Samantha Giles and Strictly Come Dancing alumni John Whaite, is glorious family fun.

Ahead of taking in the frolics at the grand Alhambra Theatre, we were after a quick tea and where quicker than a Wetherspoon pub? Your meal can be in front of you faster than you can say ‘ping’.

Across the road from the Bradford city centre theatre is The Turls Green in Centenary Square. Accompanying the usual food menu fare and daily deal (steak, during our visit) we saw the Christmas menu.

Again, going back to what I said earlier, for some, when Spoons pubs across the country put their paper festive menus down on sticky tables, back in November, is what heralded the start of the Christmas season.

Choice this year is pretty decent with a brie and bacon burger, chicken and stuffing burger and a pizza, consisting of chicken, stuffing bacon and brie, all being present and correct on the winter selections. Also listed, the roast dinner. Turkey and all the trimmings.

Disaster struck, when I went to order the latter on the chain’s app, it had sold out. You might mock, but I was genuinely disappointed. Instead, I opted for the special Christmas combo of a panini featuring chicken, stuffing, bacon and cranberry (£6.93).

While, my disappointed dining companion, opted for the buttermilk chicken burger and chips (£7.50 with a soft drink) from the regular menu. As ever with a Spoons, you know exactly what you are getting.

The service was swift, welcome given our impending date with Bradford panto royalty Billy Pearce, the meal was cheap, which shouldn’t be sniffed at, and filled a spot. But I was left longing for that Christmas dinner, I’ll have just make sure I get to another Spoons before the big man arrives with his sack…I mean Santa by the way and not JD Wetherspoon boss Tim Martin.
