Where Was ‘Ted Lasso’ Filmed? The Show’s Filming Locations Explored

“Ted Lasso” debuted on Apple TV+ screens in the latter half of 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, as hope began to dwindle for the world’s fate. The heartwarming comedy series was filmed in real-life locations, though some were under fictitious names.

“Ted Lasso” follows the story of the eponymous soccer coach called from the US to save the struggling fictional Premier League team, AFC Richmond. Much to the dismay of its devoted audience, the show aired its last season on March 15, 2023.

“Ted Lasso” became a comfort show for fans as Covid-19 regulations and lockdowns swept the globe while they sought hope in a rapidly changing world. While packed with humor and Ted Lasso’s unending positivity, the award-winning series is beloved and lauded for numerous other reasons.

The show’s main character, Lasso, embodied what the world needed to uphold in trying times: Faith. He consistently demonstrated that there was always hope, no matter the adversity. When he first entered the London soccer scene, he was immediately ostracized by the British media.

Despite their dismissal of his capabilities — though Lasso did have little experience and knowledge of the game — his confidence wasn’t shaken. His ability to see the best in every situation, even when his colleagues abused or sabotaged him, only added to the humor.

Though he doesn’t make it immediately apparent, Lasso appears oblivious to the obstacles he faces as an individual and with his new team. And yet when things reach a certain peak, he displays unquestionable wisdom that makes his optimism all the more endearing.

In addition to the central and supporting characters, Lasso’s genuinely curious and empathetic worldview depicts many social issues, including environmental neglect, unhealthy patriarchal beliefs, and the importance of maintaining good mental health.

One notable example is when he tells two fighting characters unable to resolve their conflict, Jamie (played by Phil Dunster) and Roy (Brett Goldstein), to “woman up” because, as he says, “Y’all been manning up for a while now and look what that’s got you.”

Another is when Sam (played by Toheeb Jimoh) leads a silent protest against Cerithium Oil. As sub-themes like environmental issues, government corruption, and systemic racism arise, Lasso highlights:

“When bad things happen to people like me, y’all have the tendency to write about it without it being asked, but Sam had to go and get y’all’s attention.”

Richmond Green is one of the prominent filming locations in “Ted Lasso.” It is a real place, a 12-acre park in the affluent London town of Richmond. It is known for its historical sites and buildings, including Richmond Palace and Richmond Theater.

Speaking about this place, co-creator and co-star of “Ted Lasso” Brendan Hunt revealed they had considered a different name for the beloved AFC Richmond: Greenwich FC. But after visiting Richmond with Jason Sudeikis (who plays Lasso), they changed their minds, as he recounted:

“I got to sit on Richmond Green for the first time on a sunny Friday afternoon just killing time before our flight [home], and I was just immediately enchanted by the place.”

The Crown & Anchor Pub is a fictitious name for the centuries-old sports pub The Prince’s Head. The Prince’s Head, estimated to be 300 years old, is a gathering place for sports enthusiasts, boasting an array of activities, including shooting darts, karaoke, and chess, to be enjoyed over a drink.

Hunt said it seemed like “the perfect English bar” for the show. The Crown & Anchor Pub appears repeatedly throughout “Ted Lasso” with shots of The Prince’s Head exterior; however, the interior scenes were filmed in a studio.

Lasso’s residence in the series is near The Prince’s Head. Another real-life location, Paved Court, is described as “a narrow, cobblestone pedestrian street” with inviting jewelry shops, gift shops, cafes, and fashion boutiques.

Among these delightful establishments is Chango Empanadas, where Lasso and Coach Beard (played by Hunt) became regulars. The Argentinian cafe, which chains its way throughout London, was loved by the rest of the cast and crew.

Although Lasso’s apartment address is 9 ½ Paved Court, the apartment unit, in reality, is 11A. The location attracted many fans during filming, as Hunt revealed, though they were “very polite” during their visits.

The AFC Richmond players practiced at SkyEx Community Stadium, home to the Hayes and Yeading United Football Club. The cast had to film based on the home team’s schedule. “They’re not using it every day by any means, so they were happy to have us,” Hunt shared.

SkyEx Community Stadium is located in Hayes, another London town about a 20-minute drive from Richmond. It holds professional soccer matches between August and May, with adult tickets costing approximately $12.

Nelson Road Stadium is AFC Richmond’s fictional game-day pitch; however, it is officially known as Selhurst Park, which houses the Premier League team Crystal Palace. Home games for adults cost approximately $37.

Hunt and Sudeikis, who also star alongside Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple, tried their luck at filming in several Premier League pitches, but there were restrictions.

“Every single Premier League stadium we visited [they told us], ‘Do anything you want, but if any one person sets one foot on this pristine, beautiful Premier League pitch, you’re all gone,'” the producer said.

Wembley Stadium set the exact boundaries. Therefore, on AFC Richmond’s game days, they digitally altered the background at SkyEx Community Stadium to resemble Wembley and Selhurst Park.

A few scenes were shot in Twickenham, a neighboring town of Richmond, particularly on Church Street. Fans can visit this place, which is said to “make for a lovely walk.” Craven Cottage, home to Fulham FC, also makes a minor appearance in the first season.

Other honorable mentions are the London Stadium and Stamford Bridge, which appear in season three, St. Andrew’s Church in Kingsbury, North London, and the National History Museum in South Kensington.
