Greater Manchester’s horrific experience with gangs is being featured in a new series of BBC Detectives.
The series follows a specialist policing unit in Rochdale who try to bring down the Adam Organised Crime Group (OGC) in the town. The group, based on the Newbold Estate in the town, were known for their violence, reports the Manchester Evening News.
In 2017, 17-year-old Cameron Brooksbank attempted to break up a road-rage incident while working as a tree surgeon nearby. However, he ended up almost losing his hand in a brutal axe attack.

The TV series reveals some of the backstory to the attack.
“Some… lad’s just took my mate’s hand off with an axe,” a panicked 999 caller tells the operator. “His hand is nearly off.”
When the control room asks him to go over to his pal, his reply is equally chilling: “I can’t. There’s 20 lads there. We’ve just had trouble with these lads, so they turned up in cars and got an axe out.”
This audio appears in the BBC documentary The Detectives: Taking Down An OCG and serves to shine a light on the way the gang operated. They bribed witnesses, groomed children and used extreme violence to keep control of the estate.
Cameron received life-saving surgery, which managed to reattach his hand, although he had to undergo several operations over the following years. Tragically, he died in June earlier this year.
His attacker was Mohammed Awais Sajid, known as ‘Skinny’, of Kings Road, Rochdale, was jailed for 18 years after being found guilty of section 18 wounding. He had been summoned to the scene by Habibur Rahman, who was jailed for four-and-a-half years.
Brother Zillur Rahman, 29, was jailed for three years for conspiracy to commit violent disorder after he admitted making phone calls to summon the gang. And Arsan Ali, 23, was among those he called and who attended the scene, who was jailed for four years after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit violent disorder.
