Evangeline Lilly was once the love of Dominic Monaghan’s life, but their relationship crashed and burned. On Anna Faris’ “Unqualified” podcast, he revealed that his “Lost” co-star was his biggest heartbreak. “I’ve only really got my heart broken once in my life. I was dating … Evangeline Lilly, who, you know, has gone on to have a name all of her own … I don’t really know how she would explain the narrative, but from my point of view, it was probably the first time in my life that I was just kind of all in,” he shared.
While Monaghan was dedicated to his role on “Lost,” and his relationship with Lilly, he revealed that he would party hard on the weekends. “I would only consider it a weekend if I was drunk out of my mind on a Friday and Saturday night. I thought that was normal,” he recalled. His excessive partying led Lilly to look elsewhere, which Monaghan only found out about when someone told him she was seeing another person. “Unfortunately, there was a bit of a crossover which was upsetting for me, and it exploded in my face in an awful way,” Monaghan stated.
Monaghan decided to change his ways when two months into their breakup, he woke up surrounded by pills after a night of drinking and realized he could have accidentally overdosed. Despite going through one of the worst times of his life, Monaghan stated that he’s grateful for the experience and the lessons it taught him.
