Imagine you got married but don’t have any recollection of this: no white dress, no flowers, no aisle. Yet, there are the documents proving that you had tied the knot. What would your next move be?

Getting married to many of us is a sacred act of confessing our eternal love and commitment to our significant other.

This declaration is done through ceremony and, in a less romantic sense, signing documents, particularly a marriage certificate.

A BOMB WAITING TO DETONATE

Now, while the certificate itself is simply a piece of paper, it does ingrain a sense of commitment and can have legal implications on a more grounded level.

Talia Duncombe from the Bahamas was simply another mother —  too enamored with her baby, who she gave birth to in 2020. She was so gleefully unaware that there was a piece of paper waiting to change her entire life.

A FORGOTTEN WEDDING

But, being the good mom she is, she went to get her baby’s certificate from this office, only to come across the most unexpected information. Remembering the day, the mother said

“I gave them my documents …she was taking so long, and when she finally came back, she was like ‘You’re married, and I was telling her, ‘I’m not married.'”

Duncombe was shocked because whoever said her “I do’s” alongside, she had no recollection of who they were. In essence, her identity had been stolen.

FORCING HER HAND

She said this became the worst experience she had ever had to face. One big reason is that her daughter would not be able to receive her birth certificate and passport unless this situation was resolved.

The police officers got back to the now-20-year-old mother.

The man she conceived her baby with was the individual who signed the birth certificate. But, the documents now imply that she had a baby with another man while married.

GETTING THE AUTHORITIES INVOLVED

Because of this, she would now need an affidavit and admit to this — something she never did in the first place. She then stated:

“They then will say the man who I’m married to isn’t the father, and the real father won’t sign.[sic]”

Beyond all this confusion and mayhem, this apparent husband was untraceable, so she took the issue to the police

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN

Eventually, in January 2021, the police officers got back to the now-20-year-old mother, saying that they had made significant progress. But, her hopes were dashed.

She remembered that they called her and said they had managed to find the perpetrator, but sadly he managed to get away.

Let’s hope this mom will eventually be able to get her and her baby’s identities back to move on with their lives in peace.

ADD ANOTHER THREE SPOONS

While Duncombe fought or continues to fight to find the perpetrator and prove she is not married, many men and women worldwide are pushing for the same thing. Rosa Vargas from Queens is one of them.

But, not only was she married to one man but three others as well. Three of them were fraudulent. In 2004, the bride-to-be be found out via the Clerks office that two men had already “married” her. This was most likely because of immigration scams. She said

“I was very shocked and distraught [being rejected] because it was three weeks before I was supposed to get married.”

Luckily, however, she still managed to say her “I do’s” with the man she had chosen to betroth by getting a license from another jurisdiction in Long Island.

THE FINAL JUDGMENT

Beyond that, Vargas eventually managed to nullify her two fraudulent marriages. But, sadly, she later found there was another person who had managed to “marry” her. She was reportedly still fighting to end this fake betrothal.

It is not only marriage but the identity that comes along with being wed that people keep close to their hearts. With luck, both of these women have or will find peace once again. This way, they can know that whatever ring they wear is their choice and their choice only.
