A domestic abuser left his wife believing ‘she was going to die’ after subjecting her to a frightening two hour ordeal.

Anthony Young, from Middlesbrough in Yorkshire, told the woman she’ll get her ‘kids taken away from her’ if she told police about him attacking her and locking her in a shed. The 47-year-old rained punches down on the mum’s face, headbutted her, choked her and “dragged” her across rooms after he sneaked back into the home following an argument.

The dad-of-four told her during his rage: “You’re going to die tonight,” before he used a kitchen knife to ‘stroke her arms and legs, threatening to chop her up’, reports TeessideLive.

Mr Lonsdale, prosecuting, told how the Park End man “grabbed” the woman by the hair then sat on top of her during the attack on January 3, 2022. He began to choke her with both hands, the Middlesbrough court heard.

“You’re going to die tonight,” he told her as she pleaded with him. He then “dragged” the woman to the bathroom and then back into the bedroom. Young began punching the woman in her face, grabbed the collar of her t-shirt and “headbutted her”. The assault continued as he started “slapping” her.

During sentencing at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday, CCTV footage of the night was shown. The video shows Young leaving the bar/shed in the garden of home and locking the door – leaving his former partner inside.

Escape bid

As Young disappears out of the shot, the woman crawls through a window in a bid to escape. However, Young returns with a knife and forces her back inside.

The court hears that he told her: “Get the f*** back in the bar now.” The woman apologies to him and tries to appease him by offering a drink, Mr Lonsdale adds. She stated that he then drank two cans of lager in five minutes.

In a victim statement she added that he used the knife to “stroke her arms and legs” and threatened to “chop her up”. Young later took the woman to hospital after noticing her injuries.

They waited for three hours before she discharged herself. The following day when Young left the property she called the police. Young answered no comment to all questions asked. The woman told how she has been left “traumatised” by the attack and “scared” to leave her home.

‘Out of character’

Calum McNicholas, mitigating, stated that his client has “never troubled the courts before” and has no previous convictions. He added that the incident was “out of character” for Young.

However, Judge Jo Kidd asked if there had been previous instances of domestic violence as the victim had “hesitated and was reluctant” to involve police.

Young pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He later entered a guilty plea to affray in October on the basis of using a knife and threatening the woman.

Judge Kidd outlined that the victim is Young’s ex-wife and mother of two of his children.

The judge addressed the court saying the frightening attack began when Young back into the house following an argument at around 1.30am. He gained entry to the property after scaling the garden fence, jumping on the roof of the bar/shed and opening the rear door to the home “very carefully”.

Young was “extremely intoxicated” launching the vicious attack which involved repeated punches to the woman’s head and face as well as strangling her. Young used violence on the woman across a number of rooms in the upstairs of the home before “dragging” her downstairs to the outside bar where he locked the door to “restrict her freedom”.

Judge Kidd said Young used the knife to frighten the woman and “she believed she was going to die”. She jailed Young, of Stonor Walk, Park End, Middlesbrough, for 27 months and granted a restraining order preventing Young from contacting the victim.
