Fernando Alonso was not impressed with Lewis Hamilton‘s attempt to overtake him ahead of their collision in the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday.

On his team radio, the Spanish driver didn’t hesitate to blame the Mercedes man, calling the Englishman an idiot.

“What an idiot, closing the door from the outside,” Alonso said.

“We had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first.”

The wild start to the Belgian Grand Prix

Alonso was one of three drivers who managed to overtake Sergio Perez at the start. Hamilton was then on Alonso‘s tail before going for the Spaniard on the outside.

Hamilton had some advantage, but the two were level at the turn. The English driver tried to force his way around the outside in his bid to find a gap where there was none and he hit the left front wheel of the Spaniard’s Alpine, taking a trip through the air.

Despite continuing the race, Hamilton had to retire on the second lap, which caused the safety car to come out.

Alonso was so frustrated that, as he passed the Mercedes, he even reprimanded the Englishman with his finger.

Hamilton did not go to the medical centre although it was obligatory after the crash as the car’s warning light flashed, making his check-up mandatory. He received a warning for this, but wasn’t to blame for the crash in the view of the FIA.

The FIA’s statement on the Hamilton and Alonso crash in Belgium

“The stewards reviewed the video evidence and determined that Alonso was on the inside at Turn Five,” the verdict read.

Hamilton‘s front wheels were ahead of Alonso‘s at the entry to the corner. Alonso moved his car off the line to the inside with both right-side tyres fully on the kerb and even somewhat inside the kerb.

“At no point did Alonso appear to lose control or understeer.

Hamilton turned in towards the apex of the corner with Alonso still alongside, and the collision occurred.

“The stewards considered that this was a first-lap incident with a lot of movement relative to the other cars in the first few corners, and thus take no further action.”
