Carlo Ancelotti was not pleased after Real Madrid‘s 1-1 draw at home with Girona on Sunday. The Italian coach complained about the penalty that was awarded to the visitors late in the game.

Los Blancos took the lead with 20 minutes to go through Vinicius Junior, but Cristhian Stuani came off the bench to net from the spot and help Girona grab a point at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

“I don’t like to talk about [refereeing decisions],” Ancelotti said after the game.

“The first situation is clear. It’s not a penalty because it hits him on the chest. He didn’t touch the ball with his hand, they made it up.

“The second situation is different, it can be given. What surprises me is that it came at an important moment in the match, it was on track, but it cost us a lot. After this situation, we have two fewer points in the table.

“I don’t know if that’s why we didn’t win. This episode has damaged the match. We could have played better, but at this stage of the season it is difficult to have a very high level of play. With a lot of effort, the game was on track.”

Ancelotti went to admit that the team is affected by fatigue due to the congested calendar in this first stretch of the campaign.

“We are not at the level we were last week,” Ancelotti added.

“We have had some problems, with the return of injured players [such as] Rodrygo [Goes], [Luka] Modric, [Aurelien] Tchouameni.

“We are playing a lot of matches and we are feeling the fatigue. We have the chance on Wednesday [against Celtic] to seal top [spot in the Champions League group] and the objective is to be leaders at the break. At the moment we have everything in our hands.

“The matches are complicated against all teams, it’s normal. The level is not excellent because there are many matches, too many, and there is no time to recover 100 percent physically and mentally. I don’t see anyone playing spectacularly, all teams suffer.”
