On Sunday Real Madrid took a giant step towards the LaLiga Santander title with a an impressive second-half comeback to take all three points at Sevilla and head coach Carlo Ancelotti is pleased with the way everything is coming together.
It’s not the first comeback of the season for Los Blancos and, as exciting and encouraging as such wins can be, the Italian would prefer more routine wins.
“I’m not after strong emotions, I prefer calmer games,” Ancelotti told ‘Radio anch’io sport’ in his homeland.
“The magic of this club, this team and these players is coming to light. The end of the season is in sight and we hope to finish as well as possible.”
While wrapping up the domestic title seems like a matter of when, not if, the Champions League remains a greater unknown with the might of Manchester City standing between Real Madrid and a place in the final and Ancelotti expects a close tie, even though the Citizens don’t have the same European experience that his side do.
“Real Madrid has the history, quality and tradition to compete until the final,” said Ancelotti
“Now we have a tough test against City. We’ll play our hand. The new away goals rule, where they don’t count extra anymore, makes these encounters more balanced and exciting.”
While the current season still has lots to be decided, the new one is creeping ever closer and squad building is an ongoing process, meaning Real Madrid are already thinking about who will be coming and going this summer. Ancelotti dodged questions on Kylian Mbappe, but did reveal Marco Asensio, linked with AC Milan, is having contract extension talks.
“Asensio is an extraordinarily talented player,” said Ancelotti.
“In recent years he’s had a knee injury which has kept him out but he’s played an important role in the team. I don’t know about his future, but he is talking to the club about renewing his contract.”
