Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, vice president of Argentina, was fortuitously saved from an assassination attempt on the night of this Thursday, September 1, in front of her home in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In a video shared on social media, the official is seen getting out of her car, at the moment when a man approaches her and points a gun directly at her, a few centimeters away. However, he was unable to fire the pistol, apparently because it was poorly loaded.
Immediately, security personnel accompanying the vice president reacted and arrested the alleged aggressor, although, if the weapon were to have worked properly and fired, they would not have been able to prevent the attack against the wife of former president Néstor Kirchner.
The first reports indicate that the aggressor is a citizen of Brazilian origin and that the weapon with which he tried to shoot contained five bullets.
Strong condemnation of the attack against Cristina Fernandez
In a message to the nation, President Alberto Fernandez issued a message where he expressed his “strong condemnation” and decreed this Friday, September 2, as a holiday, for no other reason.
He described the event as “extremely serious” and “the most serious that has happened since we have recovered our democracy.”
He pointed out that: “Cristina remains alive because, for a reason not yet technically confirmed, the weapon that had five bullets did not fire despite having been triggered,”
He also mentioned that “such a reality moves the entire Argentine people and in particular those of us who are her companions who embrace her in solidarity with all our love.”
“This attack deserves the strongest condemnation from all Argentine society, of all political sectors and all the men and women of the republic, because these events affect our democracy.”
And he added: “We are obliged to recover the democratic coexistence that has been broken by the hate speech that has spread from different political, judicial and media spaces of Argentine society,” she concluded.
Minutes after the attempted attack, the Government of Venezuela condemned the attack as “nefarious.”
“From the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela we repudiate the nefarious attack against the vice president, Cristina Kirchner, by a subject who tried, in vain, to shoot her,” Foreign Minister Carlos Faría wrote on his Twitter account, with a retweet of the dictator Nicolás Maduro.
The Venezuelan government reiterated its rejection of “this act of violence” and expressed its solidarity with “the brave Cristina.”
In the same tone, the former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, also condemned the events with a message on Twitter:
“We condemn the cowardly assassination attempt against our sister Cristina Fernández. All our solidarity with the vice president. The Great Homeland is with you, sister. The criminal right-wing and servile to imperialism will not pass. The free and dignified people of Argentina will defeat it.”
