Lamar Jackson appears to have put an end to matters regarding his contract negotiations with the Baltimore Ravens. At least for now. The quarterback spoke with reporters and stated that he does not wish to return to the subject anytime soon.
“Respectfully, I’m done talking about it,” he announced. “I told you before, the limit was week 1. Week 1 is gone. No more talking about it, I’m focused on the Dolphins now.”
Baltimore’s general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement that the franchise and the player have not agreed on terms for a contract renewal and should only resume talks at the end of the season: “We will continue to work towards a long-term contract at the end of the season.
The announcement came after Jackson imposed, during this offseason, week 1 as a deadline to close a new deal with the franchise.
The MVP of the 2019 season is in his final year of his freshman contract, signed after being selected with the 32nd overall pick of the 2018 Draft, with values hovering around $23 million. That way, Lamar would already be a free agent at the end of this season, should Baltimore not use the franchise tag, which would earn him $43 million in 2023.
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said in March that he did not expect Jackson to sign the new deal before the 2022 season begins: “Unless he changes his mind, calls Eric DeCosta, our general manager, and says he’s ready to negotiate, I think it’s hard for anything to happen.
Led by Jackson, Baltimore opens this regular season next Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
