Play-by-play announcer Bob Rathbun, the voice of the Atlanta Hawks telecasts on Bally Sports Southeast, suffered a medical emergency on air that left viewers shocked and praying for his swift recovery.

The disturbing scene took place just before the Hawks tip-off against the Oklahoma Thunder at State Farm Arena. Rathbun, who has been calling games in Atlanta for 26 years, collapsed on his chair during the pre-game broadcast. Sitting next to NBA legend Dominique Wilkins, both were raving about Josh Giddey, the Thunder’s young Australian phenom.

Dominique Wilkins, unaware of what was occurring just next to him, kept speaking until cameras panned out. The disturbing video, which you should only watch at your discretion can be viewed here.

Rathbun was taken to a hospital for dehydration

Bally Sports, Bob Rathbun’s employer since 1996, gave a statements after the incident: “Prior to tonight’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, play-by-play announcer Bob Rathbun briefly lost consciousness on the court,” the statement began. “Emergency medical professionals on-site quickly treated Rathbun for dehydration. He is stable, responsive and heading to Emory Midtown for further evaluation.”

Luckily, after the frightening scene, it seems that the announcer’s ailment was treated succesfully. As for the game, the Oklahoma City Thunder overcame a 14-point deficit in the third quarter to beat the Atlanta Hawks 121-114 on Monday night.
