For years, one thing that characterized WNBA star Brittney Griner was her normally long, showy hair. But during her stay in a Russian prison, that characteristic had to be modified due to a climatic and health issue.
In the most recent pictures that have been published of her, Brittney has short hair, something unusual for her, and her lawyer has explained the reason: the low temperatures in the Russian prison were causing her hair to freeze
Her makeover is only a couple of weeks old
Maria Blagovolina is the lawyer who represented Griner at her trial in Russia, and it was she who informed ESPN that the 32-year-old athlete cut her hair two Sundays ago after it froze in the prison showers.
Since Brittney didn’t know she was getting out of prison, she opted to cut her hair so she wouldn’t suffer damage to her health during the Russian winter, which is one of the deadliest on the planet.
“It’s very cold there and every time she washed her hair she would freeze,” Blagovolina said. “She should have waited until New Year’s Day.”
A look that made her famous
Griner had worn her hair long for years, and almost never wore it shorter than shoulder length, so her new look has been part of the buzz on social media. Now that she has been released from Russian prison and is back in the United States, she commented during that trip that she was happy.
After Griner landed in San Antonio, official John Kirby said she is in “very, very good spirits and appears to be in good health.” Griner will be checked by medical personnel in Texas and then begin the trip home to Phoenix.
