The time the Griner family has been dreading is here. Brittney Griner has been transferred to a penal colony, but her whereabouts are unkown. The worst part is that this will likely be the case for a couple of weeks.

The WNBA star, who was convicted on August 4th after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, failed in the October 25th appeal of her 9-year sentence and was scheduled to begin serving her time.

Russian court hears appeal by Brittney Griner

Why Brittney Griner’s whereabouts are unkown

In the vast majority of cases, transfers to a penal colony after conviction or an appeal take several weeks or even months in Russia. But given Brittney Griner’s celebrity and unfortunate status as what is seemingly as a political pawn, the move seems to have been accelerated and her defense team found out she had been moved 4 days before they found out on Tuesday.

U.S. Embassy officials were also unaware that any such move had taken place, even though they were the last to see her last Thursday.

Two grueling weeks of uncertainty for the Griner family

Griner’s family will have to endure a grueling two weeks of not knowing where is; according to her lawyers. Alerts are given via official mail and normally take around 14 days to be received.

Not to mention that the worst is yet to come, as the conditions in these poorly surveilled penal colonies are far harsher than what Birttney Griner had faced till now in the Moscow jail she had found herself in since February 17th.

The 265-day nightmare (and counting) for BG continues. In their most recent statement, Brittney Griner’s lawyers said, “Neither Brittney’s family, including her wife Cherelle or her Russian legal team will have any further statements or press availability at this time.”
