They made an official statement to the folks at Newsweek and spoke about their plans to file for an appeal. Such a harsh sentence over a small amount of cannabis is not what they were expecting.
This is what Brittney Griner’s lawyers said: “Russian court completely ignored all the evidence. This contradicts the existing legal practice. The sentence is unreasonable. Taking into account the amount of the substance (not to mention the defects of the expertise) and the plea, the verdict is absolutely unreasonable. We will certainly file an appeal.”
