The Brooklyn Half Marathon runner who collapsed after crossing the finish line on Saturday has been identified as 32-year-old David Reichman, a licensed master social worker.

Reichman was rushed to the hospital due to a possible cardiac arrest after the race along with 15 other runners who also suffered from extreme heat fatigue. Five people are seriously injured, eight have non-life-threatening injuries and four sustained minor injuries.

David Reichman COD still unclear

While it is still unclear what caused Reichman to collapse and ultimately be declared dead at the hospital, race organizers had warned participants of the heat advisory in place for New York — the first one in 16 years. Reichman’s death was the first time since 2014 where a half-marathon participant died in New York due to race complications.

Reichman was an NYU Silver School of Social Work graduate and a licensed master social worker at a practice in Brooklyn. His bio on the firm’s page says he had ‘specialized training in trauma informed care, severe mental illness, personality disorders and addictions.’

Therapy is often a difficult and painful process of self-discovery,” Reichman’s bio reads. “It is most effective when conducted in a supportive and empathetic environment where you feel safe to be challenged, to explore your past and its influence on you, and to make changes in your life.”
