After settling 20 out of the 24 sexual misconduct cases against him, Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson’s future is still very much in the air. A suspension is definitely happening but the extent of it is still unclear as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is still deciding with his board. Watson has maintained his innocence throughout this entire process but there are too many victims of his sexual misconduct.
To those who don’t recall, Watson was accused of attempting to engage in sexual acts with numerous massage therapists in a number of occasions without consent. The NFL alleges that the quarterback violated the league’s conduct policies and should be punished for it. But when will this announcement happen?
July is a possible date for the announcement.
With the NFL Players Association by his side, Deshaun Watson is getting an appeal to any punishment ready. The argument used is very simple. When team owners were accused of similar conducts, they were never punished by the NFL. They are mentioning people like Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder.
All of these men were also accused by women and suffered no consequences for it. The NFL set July 22 as the date in which the world will know how they will punish Deshaun Watson but the picture doesn’t look good for him.
What surprised everybody the most, is that this punishment could be far more severe than previously anticipated. According to Pro Football Network, the Cleveland Browns are already waiting for a long suspension for their quarterback. With the NFLPA afraid that this suspension might stand for the entire 2022 season, maybe even indefinitely.
If this happens, Deshaun Watson will lose a full year playing football. Is this possible punishment deserved for the star? Such disciplinary actions have been enforced before on other players who commited crimes, there are many instances where players get even longer suspensions than an entire season. It all depends on the crime and the legal aspects of it.
