The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) were ready to arrest Will Smith in the middle of the Oscars ceremony for slapping presenter Chris Rock.
This information was revealed by Will Packer, the producer of the Hollywood ceremony, on Thursday.
“[The police] said, ‘We will go get him. We are prepared. We’re prepared to get him right now,'” Packer told ABC’s Good Morning America.
Chris Rock prevented police from arresting Will Smith
According to Packer, the police were discussing the options with Chris Rock, but his decision not to press charges meant that they did not arrest Will Smith.
“[Chris Rock] was being very dismissive of those options,” said Packer.
“He was like, ‘No, no, no, I’m fine.’ And even to the point where I said, ‘Rock, let them finish.'”
As a result, Will Smith was not arrested and he then went up to receive his award for Best Actor less than an hour later.
Will Smith refused Academy’s request to leave the room
The Academy made clear that they asked Will Smith to leave the ceremony after the incident, but he refused their request.
