Martin Odegaard reveals reason for Arsenal's recent goal glut

A 4-0 scoreline in favor of Club America in the Concacaf Champions Cup saw New England Revolution head coach Caleb Porter concede that the Mexican giants were “the better team.”

The tie appears to be all but wrapped from a neutral’s perspective, as a four-goal leading heading into the second leg at the Estadio Azteca will require a colossal collapse from Azteca if the Revs are to progress to the semifinals.

After full-time, Porter admitted that the Revs were outmatched on their home turf against one of the best sides in all of Liga MX.

“Congratulations to Club America, they were better than us,” Porter said. “I mean, for me, they were the better team today. It’s that simple. There’s not much more I have to say. They were better than us today in every aspect of the game.”

Porter went on to explain that there are plenty of different adjustments he can make before the second leg on April 9. But he also chose to highlight that they still have an important league clash with Charlotte FC this Saturday as the Eastern Conference side are still searching for their first MLS win in 2024.

“We lose 4-0, there’s a lot of adjustments you can make. We need to focus on the
league. We have three days until we play in the league. We have to get our first win,” he said.

America have played 18 matches in all competitions since starting their 2024 Clausura campaign in mid-January. On the other hand, The Revs began their 2024 MLS season in late February and they’ve taken the pitch 10 times across all competitions, meaning that America could have a slight advantage in momentum and being more in sync by playing more games ahead of the quarterfinals.

“It would help if they didn’t put the tournament to start the season. It would help, but is what it is.
We’ll play a game every three days when we’re not fully fit and in form, and we don’t have the roster,” Porter stated. “You saw, they brought in guys off the bench that were [Designated Players] in MLS. Brian Rodriguez was a DP and so, that’s difficult. You’re playing a team that can manage, basically, the window a lot better than we can.”

The Revs are in desperate need of a win when they return to league play this weekend at Gillette Stadium, looking to go level on points with 14th-placed NYCFC with a win over Charlotte.

“We’ve got to win this next game in the league. So that’s what we’re focused on right now. And
then we’ll figure out what we’re going to do down 4-0 going on the road at Azteca.”
